Would you pop out to the shop whilst your child was in bed?

Not that I am thinking of doing it, it's just that I was in on my own last night (ds (14 months) tucked up in bed) and had major chocolate craving and there was none in the house. Anyway, as one who has said some pretty harsh things about the McCanns, of course I did the decent thing and just ate everything else in the house instead.

However, I happened to mention this to a friend today who also has kids - she looked surprised and said she nips out all the time (she is a single parent), only to the bottom of the street and only once she is sure her 2 are asleep.

Does anyone else do this??? Be honest now!

I just put dd in the buggy and nip down the road with her-if she wakes she dozes straight back off and if you need choc that much the extra effort doesn't bother you. It's rare that she's properly asleep before 8.30pm anyway and sainsbury's is 4 mins walk away! I'm an sp so have been "caught short" for nappies/wipes/coffee/juice with no one else to go and get them for as long as I can remember!

OK - well I would. The shop is 10 seconds walk from my front door. I would be out for about a minute max.

foofi · 09/03/2008 07:50

I would, although to be fair I probably didn't when my dcs were tiny.

I have done once, to buy some parcel tape. We live above a Co-Op with a PO and didn't fancy taking Tom in there twice, or parcelling the package up whilst in there. I did feel really bad about doing that and won't be doing it again.

I hate the thought of leaving him in the car when I get petrol as well. DF thinks i'm daft.

no

Alishanty · 09/03/2008 09:15

I wouldn't do it now as the shop is a 10 minute walk away but I have done it in our old house as the shop was next door and I would only do it if I knew he was asleep and couldn't get out of his cot.

life would be sometimes easier if i could. i often have to wake ds up to go and get dd from school which is 5 mins around the corner.

but i could never leave him, i dont think my nerves could take it.

beautifuldays · 09/03/2008 09:47

i have a friend who used to do this, but the shop was literally next door (old victorian terraced houses, one of them turned into a shop). it's no worse than popping round to the next door neighbours, which i have done on occasion.

mmelody · 09/03/2008 11:37

I live next door to the local shop... so yes I would but not if it were further away.

phlossie · 09/03/2008 20:28

depends on how old the children are. I said no because mine are tiny. I would if they were older.
My mum left me in charge of my sister and brother when they were 10 and 4 (I was 12) while she ran to Spar in the next street. In the 5 minutes she was out, my brother fell off the back of the sofa and cracked his head on the windowsill. Mum, of course, knew that could have happened if she had in. But I felt so guilty - I still remember it 16 years later!
Mr What If plagues my life.

Spidermama · 09/03/2008 20:31

I do.

barbamama · 09/03/2008 20:33

No for me as as others have said I'd be a basket case by the time I got back. Have been sorely tempted when dp out and desperate for chocolate, spring rolls or whatever.

barbamama · 09/03/2008 20:35

My MIL apparently did this when dp was 5 and when she came back the cooker was on fire as he had turned the gas on under a chip fryer. I think that has put me off too.

Hulababy · 09/03/2008 20:36

Personally no, I wouldn't - for many reasons.

No I wouldn't (my nearest shop is 5 mins walk away) but it has crossed my mind. I do pop upstairs to the neighbours though (but take the baby monitor with me if I'm gone for more than 2 minutes). My DS is just under a year and in a cot. I won't do it when he can get out of bed and go awandering

HaventSleptForAYear · 09/03/2008 20:48

Wow - so many nos ! My SIL (single parent) used to do this all the time, I actually think it's more dangerous when they are out of a cot as s/o else said.

Intrigued by the comment about prams outside shops - so noone does that in England anymore???? In our local town most of the shops are up 3 steps so you HAVE to leave the buggy outside. I can't do the shopping with a babe-in-arms (!) and have had no problem leaving Los outside (apart from the cold or the rain).

Can't believe people won't go out to their car or to the bin SERIOUSLY ??? agree with the shower thing - probably more dangerous (but of course I do it).

smidgery · 09/03/2008 20:57

Yes.

The shop is two minutes away. I have no dh or dp and sometimes i need milk, banana for ds's 5.30am snack or, frankly, a bottle of wine.

I lock all the doors and get there and back in about 6 minutes.

Crossing the road is a risk too. I do it every day.

Cocobear · 09/03/2008 21:06

How did the OP run out of chocolate in the first place? That's negligent.
