Nursery Report - confused and concerned

Hi wise mumsnetters,

I’m hoping someone can help me understand the EYFS birth to 5 matters?
We’ve had my daughters end of term report from nursery (just over the app) and I’m not sure on the grading. So all of the categories are marked “best fit - range 2” apart from her communication and language which is “best fit - range 1”
What range should she be at for these things (she’s 20 months) and what are the marking indicators? I’ve googled but can’t find a clear explanation.

any help would be great as this has me worried as I’d thought her speech was coming on well
Ive emailed to ask to speak to the nursery about for some clarification but of course won’t hear back until Monday now and I’ll have me worrying all weekend.

thanks so much x

I don’t understand the terms used but have you had the health visitor check? Also have you read anything like “what to expect” as this this may be more useful for knowing how your child is doing against the wide range of normal. If it is any consolation my dd was always behind in nursery but is now on the gifted list at high school so there is plenty of time.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
Id say she meets most of the milestones I can see online/nhs, so just a little bit concerned I’m missing something.

I am by no means an expert on this, but I think range 3 is 18-24 months.

Range 1 does sound like she's maybe not meeting all her milestones but remember this is just based on what they see at nursery and lots of kids are quieter/less chatty in the busy environment of a nursery. It's also quite a complex system and nursery staff are not always as qualified/experienced as might be needed to make an accurate assessment.

Speak to your HV if you have any concerns.

Most importantly don't let a number on an app worry you. You know she's ok, you've said she's meeting most of the milestones etc. Enjoy your weekend and don't stress about a school report for a baby! There is a massive range of normal development at this age.
