So! We’ve entered the world of weaning. Well I say we have. Our little one is 6 months and showing all the wonderful signs of being ready! However I’ve tried some purées and he just hates them and turns his face. I’m getting the impression he would prefer finger food - I’m losing confidence and feeling like I’ve no idea where to start with this.
I know you shouldn’t compare but everyone in my antenatal group have their babies doing well on weaning to the point one of them is starting a routine with them.
have I started this weaning chapter wrong?

Do what your instincts tell you. Every baby is different. I have a 6 month old too, he doesn't have any purees. He absolutely hates it. He has pancakes for breakfast, pasta for lunch and whatever we have for dinner. He holds. It all himself and that's what he enjoys. Go by your baby's cues and your own instinct. You will be fine!

I have done a mixture of purées and finger foods with both of mine.
DD loved finger food but would eat anything given to her really but DS has been finding purées easier (he's 9 months). DS just gets too frustrated that he can't eat finger food quick enough so he screams and cries. Very frustrating!

It's very normal for babies to screw their faces up with new flavours, it doesn't mean they don't like it. I read somewhere that it take up to 10 times for them to know if they like it or not.
Just keep trying and offering.
I always started with one time a day so focus on lunch or breakfast rather than dinner as I find dinner often upset their tummies at night in the early stages of it.
Just keep offering different things each time you try, I always ate at the same time so I would often do a mixture of finger food and purée and just let them grab the food, even if they don't eat it. It's so good for them to learn texture.

Don't worry if it feels like it's going slow, their main source of food until 12 months is milk anyway so don't worry about a schedule. Go at your babies pace.
I would say try and get the allergens given as early into weaning as possible.
If you don't have it already, then download the solid starts app as it's helpful for sizes/shapes and how to prepare certain foods
