Baby blue/purple at birth

Hi I wonder if anyone has experienced this and what the outcome was.

My baby was born last month and I looked at pictures my birth partner took at time of birth and he looked purple/blue when he came out and then pinked up ok

Muscle tone was perfect and wasn't floppy and he breathed in his own fine and cried with Apgar of 9 and then 10. So uneventful and no intervention required

It was a elected c section. He pinked up and has been fine since at new born Check and since been fine too.

I read online this can be due to minor oxygen deprivation at time of birth and even more worse things.

Have you experienced this? How was you baby developing since? Thanks in advance

They are purple at birth.

Ankerdam · 09/10/2023 11:30

Newborns are very rarely a "good colour" within the first minute or so of birth.

Stichintime · 09/10/2023 11:31

All babies come out looking like that.

Babies don’t arrive pink - in fact a 10/10 on Apgar is pretty unusual because almost all babies don’t pink up straight away.

Is there a particular reason you are asking?

Dinosaurus86 · 09/10/2023 11:37

Sounds fine to me. My baby did have a low initial agpar and had to be resuscitated but he’s still been fine. Try not to worry.

HoppingPavlova · 09/10/2023 11:38

They all look like that, it’s standard.

Blue at birth. 34 now so no ill effects x

DramaAlpaca · 09/10/2023 11:42

That's normal I think. All mine came out purple and screaming

RosesAndHellebores · 09/10/2023 11:44

Blue at birth, apgar score of 6, took what seemed like an age, to get him going. First night in SCBU. The medics helicoptered for 24 hours.

29 and married. First XV rugby, first X1 football, first X1 cricket, took a first for his first degree and has a PhD. He was fine but I think we were lucky as there were some significant errors during the birth!

StrictlyComeback · 09/10/2023 12:01

Yes mine was the same. My husband looked careful around the room and as no one seemed concerned he decided it must be normal! Now a healthy 15yo.

My DS was like a little Ribena berry after birth and his little hands and feet were blue for ages. He also wouldn't stop crying. He cried and cried and cried and so my first thoughts were "oh no he's all blue and he hates me 😭".

He's fine and a strapping teenage lad now!

Leo227 · 09/10/2023 12:21

they're all born not breathing so will be that colour.

raven0007 · 09/10/2023 12:27

My first DC was very poorly at birth, he had breathing problems and needed CPR about 5 mins after birth he was born purple and turned the colour of denim.
My second DC was born in his water, he was dark pink/purple.
My third DC was born with his corn around his neck, not breathing, he was the colour of an elephant with a purple hue.

All three are happy and healthy today, second and third both have ASD not thought to be linked to pregnancy/birth.

raven0007 · 09/10/2023 12:28

Or his cord. Not corn.

mrmagpie · 09/10/2023 12:32

My daughter was totally purple at birth. She was my third baby, the other two weren't purple (second one looked quite red though) so it wasn't the norm for me, and I was quite upset by the look of her. I actually hid the very first photos DH took of her and then I unhid them later when I realised I was being a bit silly!

Anyway she's nearly 4 now and totally fine. She was a normal colour very quickly and has been fine ever since. I understand it's unsettling and I'd had quite a 'bad' pregnancy so I was worried, but I don't think it's an indicator of anything in the long term.

Cazziebo · 09/10/2023 12:40

DD2 was completely blue when born and they whisked her away immediately. They returned half an hour later telling me "it was because she had so much fat her blood took a while to come to her skin". 😮

She was 9lb 12 so pretty big baby.

breathequietly · 09/10/2023 12:53

Mine both looked like little angry purple men when they first came out!

Dyra · 09/10/2023 12:54

They're all purple at birth, then should pink up quite rapidly. It's if they stay purple/go pale when the alarm bells go off.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 09/10/2023 13:15

Apgars of 0 and 0 for DS, and he's fine now, miraculously.

eliayd · 09/10/2023 14:01

Thank you all for posting. It's really reassured me. I wish there was more out there to talk about this x
