Yesterday I sat down with my 5 year old and realised I didn't know..

much about her really..

We always spend lots of time together and do stuff/stay in etc and we talk a lot but I haven't in a long time asked her about herself.. I ask about school and everything else but basic things like

What her favourite colour is
Which has been her favourite holiday
what's the thing she likes doing more than anything else in the world
what her favourite food is

Does everybody else in the world know these things about the children and I've just missed something key?

I asked her loads of questions.. I think she thought I'd cracked up by the expression on her face.

She also looked at me like I was a complete idiot when she told me 'pink' was her favourite colour.

Am I a bad MOFO? or is it normal not to know this stuff?

am seriously perplexed at DD's impression of me..I will own up to the biscuits adn the occasional glass of vino - bu t I am NOT a channel changer

rue · 06/03/2008 17:01

yeah but you have to bear in mind that at this age, their favourite things change daily.
No, hourly!

And anyway, we can't be expected to feed 'em, clothe 'em, create costumes for World Book Day with 3 hours' noice, make sure they have clean teeth, rpovide them with constant playdates, help with homework and know the workings of their rich emotional life as well, surely?

@ finbar's categories
I think we should all get our dcs to do this and compare

I got a lovely card saying

To Mummy
happy muvas day
I love you

I love the way children are so clued up to adults drinking habits, be it wine or tea/coffee.

Looked through ds's books at parents' evening. TWICE he has written 'I like my house because it is messy'.

This would be the 4yo who actually got the hoover out the other day and did the sitting room almost all by himself... should I blush, or be proud?!

(He then demanded pen, paper and sellotape. Wrote a note and stuck it firmly to the vacuum - 'The hoover is tired and doesn't want to do any more hoovering for a week'. I have translated from emergent spelling!)

DumbledoresGirl · 06/03/2008 17:09

LOL cod about playing the game of can daddy remember everyone's birthday. Glad to know my dh is not the only one.

He once made a famous mistake when he went to China and brought home beautiful stamps for each of the children. Their names were written on them in Chinese and on top was an animal in marble equating to the Chinese year of their birth. Trouble was, dh had got three out of the 4 years wrong!

Last night, an insurance policy came though the post and dh asked me to check it. He has only gone and got 3 out of 4 years of birth wrong again! He can only remember dd's year of birth because she was born in 2000!

I came into the living room last night and there were about 5 signs written on paper and stuck to the wall saying "NO DOGS"

When I asked why she said

"Because it's a zoo, OBVIOUSLY"

(the dog was in her basket so clearly exempt)

DualCycloneCod · 06/03/2008 17:11

he was staff mebbe

MascaraOHara · 06/03/2008 17:11

lol Fio.

I escaped lightly with some flowers drawn on a card and a tippable watering can stuck on with one of those funny pins that allow things to move the sort you only see on blue peter and in schools.

my mother's day delight was tesco flowers; 'look mum, your favourite flowers, irises!' (they were daffodils)

Plus a homemade card done whilst Tracy Beaker was on the telly, so not one of her best efforts! Mind you this is what she wrote in it, bless her:

Name: Getorfmoiland
Amazed the world on: 3rd March 1978
Looks through: green eyes
Legs walk on: size 9 feet
Every morning she brushes: blonde hair
Her heart belongs to: the one and only dad who is a fathead

And written along the bottom of the card: MY MOST BEAUTIFUL MUMMY!!

Bizarre!

DualCycloneCod · 06/03/2008 17:13

fathead?

CountessDracula · 06/03/2008 17:13

dd kindly bought me an ice lolly making thing (gee thanks)
And a rather nice cooking with your kids cookbook

The dog did well with posh olive oil and salt

DualCycloneCod · 06/03/2008 17:13

another good cod excercise is this

get the kids to write a list of WHO loves them
