My 13 year old got braces about a month ago, followed all the advice re cleaning teeth etc and dentist today said they have a plaque build up and to “brush better” can anyone offer any advice? Should I book her in for an oral hygiene app? She’s trying her best and spends ages and feels like she’s let the dentist down!

Does she use the little interdental brushes? That was the key for my ds. Specialist dental sites also sell brushes that work with braces. My ds teeth are so much better now, I was considering a water flosser, will see what the dentist says next week.

Get them to use disclosing tablets after brushing and second tepe or interdental brushes .
Kids tend to not brush between brackets and wire and often moss down by gums and behind teeth.

Does she have an electric toothbrush? I found it made a massive difference when I had braces

Yup, electric toothbrush, interdental brushes and disclosing tablets.

It took dc1 a couple of months to get the hang of proper brushing. He thought he was brushing well, and was surprised at what the disclosing tablets revealed. Using the tablets helped teach him better brushing.

We had dc2 use the tablets from the beginning, so he got the hang of it much faster.

They were supposed to brush their teeth after lunch, but none liked doing this at school. So we kept toothbrushing paraphernalia in the downstairs loo as well, and they would brush as soon as they got in from school instead. If I'd sent them upstairs to brush, it wouldn't have happened! But after several months the habit was so well established that they really brushed upstairs after school.
