Omeprazole for reflux babies - reviews?

Hi everyone,

My little one has just been prescribed omaprazole (a lose dose as he's only 4 weeks old) and just wondered what people's experiences have been with it? He's had terrible reflux since he was a week old so I'm so hoping this helps him, relieves his pain/discomfort and helps generally improve his sleep and contentment when awake!

Thanks

V good
can constipate
needs increasing with age

reflux baby 2 was hell, wish it had been licensed when they were small. Wish more people knew about cmpa

It was definitely a huge help for us. She was diagnosed with CMPA at 4 weeks so when we changed her milk we initially came off the omeprazole but turns out she still needed it. Couple of dose increases as she grew but once she was settled on weaning etc it was no longer required.
I was always told that reflux is a symptom, not an issue in itself. So best to explore avenues as to why it's happening. Good luck!

I go back and forth with whether or not DS has reflux but I missed a few doses and he started vomiting a lot and arching and crying again so it does seem to be doing something.

It was hard getting it down him at first - I actually asked on Mumsnet and got loads of helpful advice so let me know if you want me to pass on the tips!

Can I ask how you knew your babies had reflux? I thought he did initially because he had arching and crying, hoarse voice, vomiting, couldn't lie on his back etc but I increasingly wonder if I was right or not.

@Janefx40 thanks for replying, we suspected it right away mainly because our first baby DIDN'T have it so when this little one started throwing up lots we knew something was different, plus signs of silent reflux almost right away - he sounded very 'fluidy' straight after feeds and I could hear repeated regutitation and then swallowing it back down, with lots of fussiness/writhing/grunting/being generally unsettled and clearly uncomfortable. We'd also had a couple friends have reflux babies so spotted the similarities!

I'm hoping the omeprazole makes him a lot more comfortable, but I know it doesn't stop the vomiting itself - have you found it easier to deal with? I just want to be able to lay baby on his back without causing him pain and sleepless nights!

If it doesn't work, make sure to come off it quickly as it increases their risk of breaking bones for years to come.

I’d only suggest Hipp organic milk if on formula, well known to help in this scenario. My little boy had omeprazole but I managed to wean off once he settled on Hipp organic. Best of luck! It does get better

haleysunshine32 · 05/10/2023 02:11

Thanks @GamechaGamechanger2019 I'm EBF at the moment but want to eventually combi feed and Hipp is what we used with my first - did you move to the Hipp organic anti-reflux formula or just the normal one?

@widebrimmedhat and @haleysunshine32 thank you for what you said. I have decided to take my boy off omeprazole based on what you said and some internet research. I'm not convinced his reflux is that bad to be worth the long term use of omeprazole.

We have been prescribed formula which has no milk protein but he is currently EBF so I will see how I feel about taking it. I would like his weight gain to improve but I love our breastfeeding rhythm and don't want to interrupt it

Good luck with what you decide x
