Toddler calling everyone mum when she wants something

Hi guys I just needed some advice. So my daughter is 18 months and has started talking a fair bit. Her first word was mamma and she was around 9 months so she can say mum and dad and a few others

So she calls me and she’ll say mum mum my mum and I’ve noticed that sometimes when she calls my in laws (her grandparents) when she needs soemthing she’ll say mum. It almost looks asthiugh she’s saying it to them. But when I ask her where grandma or grandad she can point it easily.

I’ve noticed she only does jr when she needs something. And my mil encourages it as kn she responds tk her and says yes mum which I don’t agree with as you’re telling her it’s ok to call hee mum

Yes, it's extremely common for small children learning to talk to use mummy for all female caregivers and daddy for all male caregivers.

It's just a phase she is going through granny thinks it's funny and cute don't let it worry you just repeat that's daddy/ granny/the cat when she says it.

We left our son (he was around 2) with my mother in law over for the weekend. He started calling her mama. We were also worried but after a week it was gone.

If you think it through, your child is still working out what words mean. If you go for a walk, you might point out "car" or "dog". You don't say "a green Ford fiesta" or "a black labrador". It's quite a leap for a child to realise that "mum" just means you.
