Caught 13 year old with a vape.. how to handle?

Earlier I caught my 13 year old daughter trying to hide a vape in a room. My initial reaction was to be stern, no shouting but I confiscated the vape and told her she's not going out with her friends today. Told her I was disappointed and if I caught her again,I'd be confiscating her phone and ipad too.

Now I'm questioning if I could have handled it better, or at least maybe redeem it a little now. I didnt really give her the chance to talk and I'm worried that she's now going to shut off further from me. However I've no idea how best to handle this, bearing in mind there may be addiction involved also. Anyone any advice?

Could you sit down with them and explain you were so cross that a discussion would not have been good at the time, but you want to give them the opportunity to explain why they did it?

Use it as a chance to educate about the reasons why they shouldn't do it and provide a punishment if you feel it necessary?
