Do you let your kids climb UP slides or are you of the Park Etiquette Brigade?

I let my DS climb up it, if there are no other kids waiting to slide down and the park isn't busy or anything, but I've noticed some parents stopping their children doing this or tutting when other kids do it. What's your opinion?

Oooh, we've had these threads before!
I saying nowt!

babyinarms · 05/03/2008 18:43

My ds does it but again i dont let him if park is busy or other kids waiting to go! I get those strange looks too but just ignore them!

FrannyandZooey · 05/03/2008 18:43

yes it's fine but please NOT when other people are coming down
and please NOT on the ruddy helter skelter which is about 20 foot up when a shed load of kids are coming down, resulting in complete mayhem and near death experiences
while you look on and smile and say "ha ha! she is completely fearless"

I don't let them, it does annoy me especially when children are clearly coming down and the other parent saying nothing to their precious child going up the slide. Slides are for going down not up imo.

MrsCarrot · 05/03/2008 18:44

people tut if a child climbs up the slide?

ALMummy · 05/03/2008 18:45

I certainly do let my kids climb up slides and in fact pretty much anything else they feel like doing as long as it is not ruining other peoples enjoyment or pushing in the way of other kids etc.

pigleto · 05/03/2008 18:45

gets the slide all muddy too

OverMyDeadBody · 05/03/2008 18:46

Yes, it's absurd, people tut! Have they nothing better to do??

I had to tell someone else's child not to climb up the slide on numerous occasions today as he went down it and then started to climb back up it as other children were coming down. The mother seemed oblivious.

But he needed telling - someone was going to get hurt.

babyinarms · 05/03/2008 18:46

Kids love to do it for some reason, so why not let them when there is no one waiting to go...dont see the problem really!!!

The mud thing is annoying, I know they get dirty but sliding down a slide with muddy footprints on is horrible.

MrsCarrot · 05/03/2008 18:47

all children want to climb up the slide though, it's fun, if someone is coming down then you move them off.

OverMyDeadBody · 05/03/2008 18:48

I agree wannabe, in situations like that they need telling! that some mums are so oblivious!

can't abide selfish sliders...teach your children manners!

MrsCarrot · 05/03/2008 18:48

It's a park, it's muddy!

Do you get cross if a child stands in a swing too?

wildwoman · 05/03/2008 18:49

I mean selfish climbers I suppose

McDreamy · 05/03/2008 18:50

Mud is healthy well it is in our house anyway

AnAngelWithin · 05/03/2008 18:50

i dont let mine climb up them. at the end of the day if they have shit on their shoes then someones gonna end up with it all down their back, legs and bum.

WingsofanAngel · 05/03/2008 18:50

Yes they can climb up. They usually know not to climb up when others are coming down.

babyinarms · 05/03/2008 18:51

yeah i agree if others are waiting then the carer should stop them!

wannaBe · 05/03/2008 18:51

no I certainly don't let them stand in the swing as I knew someone who did that, fell out and broke her arm..

policywonk · 05/03/2008 18:52

I do it so long as no-one else waiting to come down. (Well I don't do it myself, obviously. Not yet that deranged.)

ComeOVeneer · 05/03/2008 18:54

I don't let mine, but that is because as a child I did it, fell from close to the top and was taken to hospital with asuspected fractured spine (it wasn't but my god it hurt).

MrsCarrot · 05/03/2008 18:55

but if they've got shit on their shoes then it will be on the ladder as well, kids hold the ladder when they climb up

and my point about standing on the swing wasn't about safety, I generally tell mine to sit down, but I wouldn't tut at another child in case their shoes were dirty.
