I was wondering if any parents with hearing loss could let me know how you find it please?
I have a lifelong condition which causes hearing loss, I can have surgery that temporarily fixes it but it will always go again. There’s also a real possibility I will eventually be unable to have further surgery as it causes scarring each time.
When my hearing goes, I have a year or so of waiting to be seen, referred, assessed, etc and then I wear hearing aids while I wait for my next surgery (normally also a years wait). They make a huge difference but I still struggle in loud busy environments.
We’re planning to TTC next year and I’m starting to feel quite anxious about my hearing loss impacting on any children we’re lucky enough to have. I’d be mainly fine at home where it’s quiet but I know I’d struggle in a playground/playgroup/busy parents evening. I don’t want them to miss out on socialising because I can’t engage with other parents or to be different because I can’t come to parents evening. My friend (also has hearing loss) said she sometimes can’t hear her baby stirring but I’m hoping there’s adaptive tech for baby monitors so I can Bluetooth to my aids.
I did try to look for accessibility info on our local primary school’s website but they only have a very old audit report which says they need a portable loop and to consider parents with hearing loss more! So I’m turning to mumsnet in the hope someone here with experience can provide some reassurance!
