Reflux formula

Hi all!

My 12 week old had terrible reflux which peaked at about 8 weeks. He was bringing up lots of milk but also his sick was smelling acidic. Doctor prescribed gavisgon (which didn't help at all) and said if that doesn't work change to an anti reflux formula which I've done. He's now on aptamil anti reflux which has helped with his reflux massively however he's now really constipated and every evening seems to be in distress with his stomach struggling to pass wind.

Does anyone has any suggestions on what I can try at all? From what I've read it seems to be that a lot of the reflux formulas cause constipation...

Awwww my LO is 12 weeks too and had reflux early on. He’s been on formula since 4 weeks due to tongue tie and was so sick after bottles we switched to aptamil anti reflux….it was great for about 10 days then caused awful tummy problems. Terrible trapped wind and left him writhing around for hours and he used to being up lord of acid too. I thought the aptamil milk stunk too and really wasn’t a fan.

When he was 9 weeks I thought I’d give a different milk a go. We had been using colief drops in his milk because I had suspicions that the reflux milk; because ithe milk sat in the tummy longer was causing the wind from the lactose breaking down: I switched to hipp comfort milk (which he the lactose broken down considerably) and just added a tiny bit of carobe l to it to thicken it. The acid stopped immediately and the wind took about a week to totally settle down but he’s so much happier. He is still a bit sick sometimes if he rushes a bottle but it’s totally manageable and much better than watching him suffer with acid. I’ve weaned him off the caribe’s too now.

It may be the brand, I know a few people who swear aptamil caused acid. Hope you find a solution!

Thanks for replying!
Glad your little one is much better on the Hipp. I've just been to get some so will give it a go. Where did you by the carobel from? Or did you get it prescribed?

That’s ok, I know how frustrating it is trying to figure out the best combination! I’ve found the Hipp comfort so much gentler on his tummy, as he gets a little older I will wean him onto regular Hipp milk too.

I ordered my Carobel on Amazon (cow&gate make it) but I’ve seen it on shelves in lots of pharmacies too. No prescription needed. I started off putting the recommended amount and then slowly put less and less as he got slightly older and the reflux settled.

hope you have some success!

Hey!
I wondered how your little one is getting on with the hipp comfort? X

Thelazygardener · 24/10/2023 23:26

@Daffodil0407 hey. So he did improve on the hipp comfort especially during the day but the 3am onwards wind was still awful! A friend came by and saw my perfect prep machine and just mentioned her daughter had colic and wind and she stopped using prep and she improved.

I stopped using prep machine and would you believe it no more wind! He has actually slept through the night for 3 nights which I never thought possible. I think the prep was adding bubbles that were building up through the day.

not sure how you make bottles though so that may be irrelevant anyway. How’s your LO doing?

Daffodil0407 · 24/10/2023 23:32

Funny you should say that.... when I'm out and about he drinks a full bottle but when I'm home and using the prep machine he doesn't and really cry's during the bottle.... im going to give it a try tomorrow without using the prep machine.

Was his reflux still better with the comfort and carob?

Glad to hear he's been sleeping through!
