Teaching 10mo to be gentle

My 10 month ds is so sweet, and obviously he doesn’t know what he’s doing but have you got any ideas for teaching him “gentle”? He likes bashing and scratching things including people 🙈 I’ve been showing him me stroking his Pooh bear and saying “ahhhhh gentle” and getting him to do it with his hand. Any ideas? I thought maybe getting him a doll and showing him on that might help? He played with a friend’s dolly yesterday and was “kissing” it and being affectionate so I think he gets it’s supposed to be a person. Would it work? Any other ideas?

We have a dog so it was important to teach this to DD.

We started by physically showing her (not on the dog!) So e.g. take her hand and gently stroke my face with it while saying gentle, gentle. Then let her have a go and if it got too 'hitty' take hand again and repeat....and repeat repeat repeat!
