Formula amounts newborn

Hello

I wondered if anyone had any advice on measurements for newborn formula? My boy is almost 4 weeks old - formula box says 5 feeds a day which is crazy - he's on more like 8-10. We're currently making up 120ml bottles but he'll only take max 100ml and not forcing him to finish by any means. We're feeding on demand.

When should we increase the amount and what to? There's so much conflicting info online!

Thanks so much

Should've said he weighed 8lbs on day 14. Not been weighed since!

My DS also liked lots of smaller feeds throughout the day. My midwife was always trying to get me to go 3 hours without feeding him in the early days and I just refused. Eventually around 6-8 weeks, he started to consolidate. A good rule of thumb I found was that if there's a little bit left in the bottle, it's about the right amount. As soon as a baby starts drinking the whole thing, it's time to add an extra ounce.

Mine was the same. He likes little and often. He went longer about 8 weeks in. Congrats on your newborn xx

Sounds like you’re doing a good job to me and you don’t need to change anything. The formula boxes are completely wrong about how often newborns need feeding. Just continue feeding on demand. Mine didn’t do 5 feeds a day until she was about 6 months old and dropped her night feed (so we were feeding roughly every 3hr during the day at that point).

I was always told 2/3 Oz per pound of their weight in 24 hours so for an 8lb baby 16 - 24 oz in total. This seemed to be about what my bottle fed DC was interested in and what she thrived on.

Honesty my son would be screaming the house down if I followed the instructions on the formula box. My HV said the serving suggestions were ridiculous!

My son was born 3 weeks early and the had tongue tie so sat at just over 5lb for 3 weeks but then he more than made up for it! Greedy little man was doing 5oz every 2 hours for weeks catching up! We went through a particularly fun phase where he snacked all day long for 3 weeks too, about 2oz a time.

Hes 12 weeks now and around 13lbs and is taking 4/5 oz every 3 hours or so in the day and managing about 4/5 hours at night so only one night feed really but that’s literally only just happened. Still feeding around 7/8 times in 24 hours.

I think they are so individual! As long as there’s a bit of milk left over in each bottle I’d just keep the amounts the same for now. And up it when they start to finish bottles.

I've had 2 snacky babies, follow your instincts :) I always upped the amount when they consistently drained a bottle
