I grew up in the country and had the luxury of the most enormous garden. My parents did all kinds of things to make it interesting but my favourite thing was the overgrown patch under the apple trees where the grass was taller than i was - bliss! I loved it.
Apart from that it was the hay bales in the farmland behind the cottage.
I would really suggest a wild area if you can - great for wildlife too (butterflies etc)

We have wild area in the garden with frogs!! Very entertaining and there isn't even 2 inches of water thereas it's full of plants (mint and such), just a wet patch really. The smallest pond-shape dish, but filled with soil, mint and other plants and frogs live there and also cat likes to go there for a drink! It's at the back of some shrubbery close to the fence with no access as such and not even visible. Or get a bird bath.
