14 month old throwing ALL food on the floor. At the end of my tether

Please please can somebody help. My 14 month old is just throwing absolutely everything on his plate during meal times on the floor. He’ll have about 1 mouthful & then it’s floor time. I’ve tried everything

  • Splash mat, picking up the food 3 times only & putting it back on his plate whilst explaining where food belongs. Then taking it away if he continues
  • Ignoring him when he throws food on the floor & taking his plate away
  • Giving him a fork or something in his hand to bang to distract him - this works the best & he’ll eat a few more spoonfuls this way if we feed him using a fork
  • Saying ‘on the plate or in the mouth’ which he does respond to but still doesn’t eat it

I’m exhausted & dread meal times. I home make everything so it’s exhausting to cook fresh as well as batch cook for it all to end up on the floor, not to mention expensive!

Please if anybody has any advice i’d really appreciate it

thank you, one very fed up Mum x

We had a similar problem and we 1) gave her only 1 piece of food at a time and built up (she got overwhelmed by a big plate) and 2) gave her a second, empty bowl. We taught her that if she was finished with a food, she should put it in that bowl instead of throw it. This worked particularly well for us!

Good luck.

Oh lovely that sounds hard.

I never had this as I’ve always had Labradors so if they chucked it - it was gone in seconds.

it might sounds crazy but what about putting it on the floor - or putting it in pouches and then just squeezing it out?

Just give one piece at a time?

Don't put the plate where he can reach it and hand/feed him small amounts at a time.
Does he think it's a game?
Does he not like the food?

Just give him one bit at a time.

Do more meals where it's just 'bits', much easier to make (and rescue from the floor).

And just push through, he won't be doing it when he's 18. He won't starve to death. Just let him crack on.

At that age I just put one or two bite fulls of food on the plate at a time.
