21mo doesn’t say yes no but has understanding?

So my 21mo is still using babble words but he’s really improved like he says backpack now and brings us his backpack etc

I ask him questions to allow response, I give him choices with snacks etc and he will push something away and turn his head and kind of do a ‘nooo’ sound but doesn’t say yes or no

and doesn’t nod his head or shake his head

Is this all normal? I’m worried about the babble type words but nursery have a S&L specialist who I spoke to so she went to do a little mini assessment and said he’s fine. His understanding is amazing and she isn’t concerned

but I think as a parent it’s easy to compare which I have been doing

Sounds completely normal to me, I know 21 month olds who have no words at all.

My son is 23 months now, he was saying yes a bit earlier but didn't say no until around the 21 month mark, up until that point I used to just get a scream of displeasure if he wanted to say no to something.

My DD was 21 months when DD2 came along (only mention because I remember exactly what stage she was at) at that point she really said hardly anything at all. She would say dada and what I think now was mama but honestly the rest was just noise. She’s almost 3 now and never shuts up!

Thank you both :) I just constantly worry and compare!

he clearly demonstrates no will put his hand up like a palm and turn his head away (which is so cute) and his sound he makes is like a noooo / goooo so I feel he’s getting there

It doesn’t help BIL has a kid that’s 2 months apart from DS so it feels like DH’s family constantly compare them/what they do

and DS is my first child so I don’t know what’s normal speech wise etc

Totally normal. My son had very few words at 21 months, and none at all before 18 months. It suddenly took off soon after, he seemed to learn a word or two a day at around 22/23 months and soon after he turned 2 he started talking in sentences - his speech just exploded.

He's now 4 and does not shut up... and I remember reading worries like yours on Mumsnet to reassure myself back then. If he's been assessed then he's fine.

Also I recommend you watch an episode of Bluey called 'Baby Race' 😂

Thanks all :)

now that’s something I’ve heard , is it true they go from like babble words to just actual words?

IVE heard they get a little language burst and can go from the babble words to just full blown speaking

Totally agree that their speech clicks over night, it's pretty amazing!

Totally nothing to worry about based on your post. At 21 mo my son had less than a handful of words but excellent understanding. He hit his birthday and THE NEXT DAY repeated the entire alphabet to us. It's been less than 2 months and he's using sentences now.

Once day your child will just start talking and never stop.
