3.5 year old throwing drinks and hitting

My son is 3.5 and is the gentlest little boy. He is very gentle with friends, has always been great at sharing and is overall a sensitive, loving boy.

However, he has recently started taking out his frustration on myself and DP by hitting and throwing things. This evening he grabbed my glass from the side and when I asked him not to walk around with it, he did, so I took it away from him and replaced with a plastic cup. Next thing I know he’s vanished to the kitchen, re appears and launched a cup of ribena at me. I told him his TV programme was going off because of that behaviour which upset him even more, so he started hitting.

These episodes never last long. He usually breaks down and starts crying, we talk about it, have a cuddle, and move on. But, is this kind of thing normal? He’s my first and this is such a new behaviour.
