why is my baby crying during feeding?

My DS (7months) has started crying while he's being fed. We're at second stage weaning, so trying various new things. I can't work out if he's crying because he's really hungry and then can't calm himself down by the time the food actually appears, or if it's because he doesn't like the food much, or if it's something else. But he's crying as he's actually eating, so it's hard to see it could be because he hates the food.
It's not the high chair, which he's happy in; it's not any of the other usual things (nappy/tired, whatever.) So what's going on?
Any shared experiences? Is he just a bit overwhelmed by the weaning experience?
He doesn't always do it, but it seems to be an increasing amount, and it's really upsetting.

Had same thing with DS2. He was so greedy that I wasn't feeding him fast enough. I'm not suggesting that you push food in his mouth faster!! but with milk and puree food they can have the feeling of being full up quite quickly, but when they have to make more of an effort to chew and swallow it takes longer go feel full. Anyway that was the case with DS2. He doesn't do this anymore. I feed him at earlier times now (when waking up at about 6.30, and at 11.30 and at 3 pm, with snacks in between). Do you give water/juice with food?

in fact I've never tried giving him water at all! maybe it's time...
yes, that's interesting, maybe he's crying because he's still hungry, while he's eating. that would make sense, because he seems happy at the end of it, ie when he finally feels a bit fuller.
at the moment his feeds are at about 9am, 2pm, and 5.30pm, with bottles of milk in between, but we're very much experimenting with the times. i'm going to move breakfast back to 8am, and then see how the other meals fit round that, as he's SO hungry in the morning.

At about 9 months I switched from giving him bottles between meals to after the meals. So it's breakfast at 6.30 ish followed by bottle.

Giving water might help. I've found that the best way of giving water and diluted juice out of a beaker is to leave the beaker out on the highchair tray, or anywhere, so that he will play with it and eventually put it in his mouth and enjoy a drink. If you try to give it to him like a bottle he might refuse because it's so different. It's the long way around but has worked with my 2!
