Did your bum shuffler ever crawl?

DS2 has just turned one year old.
Hes been bum shuffling for about two months and started cruising furniture, loves to be stood up. The bum shuffling looks like it takes loads of effort, one leg is bent and the other stretched outwards and he uses his arms to push himself along.
No signs of crawling - he’s never really enjoyed tummy time or being on his front. I assume he might skip the crawling stage entirely and go straight to walking? If you had a bum shuffler did they ever crawl?

Our son just went straight from bum shuffling to standing/walking - he never crawled at all.

DebbyU · 15/09/2023 15:11

Our's never crawled but was an expert bum shuffler!

FizzyFucker · 15/09/2023 15:11

My bumshuffler went straight to walking, but not until they were 1 week shy of their 2nd birthday.

Now a very energetic and well balanced 5 year old, so the delay doesn't seem to have done any harm!

Only after she could walk.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 15/09/2023 15:15

Apparently I was a very fast mover as a bum shuffler. Family legend has it mum had to run after me down the street more than once, and she was so upset that I wore out so many pants etc. (50+ years ago and terry nappies!) I never crawled and went straight to walking and never ever sat still. Perpetual fidget.

Redebs · 15/09/2023 15:18

In my experience, it's either or. Once a bum shuffler gets to her or his feet, they tend to not want to go back to try crawling.

horseymum · 15/09/2023 15:19

Nope, mine didn't ever crawl. Walked at 22 months. Bum shuffling more efficient than crawling as you can carry things too! Do just watch out for flat feet later as it may be linked to a degree of lax muscles. My DC needs insoles for shoes to correct but is incredibly fit and sporty.

Allthestories · 15/09/2023 15:23

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 that made me laugh! Same here, down to wearing out pants (and shoe buttons)

OwlBasket · 15/09/2023 15:24

My bum shuffler never crawled either. It’s important for developing various sorts of coordination so we were given exercises for him. I’m not in the UK so no idea if they do anything like that over there. He’s 15 now so I don’t remember the specifics of why it was thought to be so important for development

Coffeesnob11 · 15/09/2023 15:28

No he never did and because he was fast and tall he bum shuffled until he was 2. I never crawled either apparently. I didn't really bum shuffle either much. I sat and talked!

LeaW · 15/09/2023 15:31

Bum shuffler straight to walking at 17 months. Worked out he could take stuff with him!

now 6 and fine but shocking coordination 🤣🤣

HareOverThere · 15/09/2023 15:38

Mine bum shuffled straight to walking at 18 months. I was told bum shufflers often start walking later than crawlers because they’re already upright.

SummerInSun · 15/09/2023 15:50

Both DS were bum shufflers. I know it looks like a lot of effort and slow when they start, but boy did mine get fast. Like PP, they never crawled - why would you start moving around in a way that has you looking at the floor and uses your hands when you've worked out how to move looking out at the world and with your hands free? - but went straight to walking at 18 months.

fizznchips · 15/09/2023 15:53

My child went from not ever bum shuffling or crawling straight to walking. The only problem was she couldn't work out how to pull herself up to start with! Walked at 13 months too, think she was just a bit lazy!

LactoseTheIntolerant · 15/09/2023 15:58

My youngest ds (now 14)was a bum shuffler and never crawled. Interesting what pp have said about lack of coordination my ds has dyspraxia, and according to the Ed psych bum shuffling as a baby is one of the potential symptoms.

MaybeMaybeNotish · 15/09/2023 16:06

Mine didn't crawl either. I think she was about 15 months when she finally decided to get up and walk which was a lot later than her sibling who crawled.

Her coordination has always been good although she's now a teenager and can't dance for toffee.

Goldmember · 15/09/2023 16:09

No. Never. I had two bum shufflers. They were fairly static and lazy babies, not particularly curious or exploring types. Hated tummy time so were always on their backs. They walked late, 18m but were quite steady when they did.

soundsys · 15/09/2023 16:16

Yep my bum shudder went straight with walking as well. I think once they've found a way of getting to where they want to be they're not that fussed about crawling

clarepetal · 15/09/2023 16:25

Apparently, I did it as a baby. Walked fine- it can be a sign of dyspraxia

Cropcycle · 15/09/2023 16:31

Another one that went straight from bum shuffle to walking at about 19 months.

HappyPurrrsday · 15/09/2023 16:39

Mine was the same as Bluey in the episode Baby Race.

Went from bum shuffling to crawling… backwards…! Then she crawled forwards and was quite a late walker-17 months ish-I think because she was quite happy using her bum to get everywhere 😆

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 15/09/2023 16:41

No, he bum shuffled till 22 months - then suddenly got out of his pushchair and walked off along the South Bank on a busy summers day!

WeightoftheWorld · 15/09/2023 16:49

No, she went from bum shuffling to walking.

My second did a mix of the two initially but then settled on the crawling for the most part and then eventually walked (delayed though due to health issues).

MonkeyPuddle · 15/09/2023 16:51

Mine went from bum shuffling to walking at 18mo.
He used to ware through his trousers.
No issues with coordination now at 6.

I've heard this too, and my DM was a bum shuffler (it runs in families) and although doesn't have a diagnosis I'd bet money on her being diagnosed with dyspraxia if she had ever been assessed. She has odd handwriting, can't swim, can't ride a bike, never was into sports as struggled at school, is very clumsy, and took 4 attempts and a million lessons to pass her driving test.

BUT my DD bum shuffled and I wouldn't say she is particularly sporty at 5, but she learned to ride a bike in about 20 mins a few days a go, she goes on her scooter confidently at the skate park, she can already swim a little bit and she loves fine motor activities too like crafts and Lego etc. So no signs of dyspraxia there.
