Did your bum shuffler ever crawl?

DS2 has just turned one year old.
Hes been bum shuffling for about two months and started cruising furniture, loves to be stood up. The bum shuffling looks like it takes loads of effort, one leg is bent and the other stretched outwards and he uses his arms to push himself along.
No signs of crawling - he’s never really enjoyed tummy time or being on his front. I assume he might skip the crawling stage entirely and go straight to walking? If you had a bum shuffler did they ever crawl?

Nope. Mine bum shuffled for about 2 months then walked.

Usernamesarenoteasy · 15/09/2023 17:32

Mine were both bum shufflers, in very different styles. Neither crawled.

Medlady · 15/09/2023 17:35

2 bum shufflers here. I blame wooden floors

though ds is dyspraxic, and the jury’s out on dd

It can be a sign of hypermobility too. One of mine just bum shuffled then walked. The other had a strange hybrid technique but could crawl and bum shuffle. Both walked at 12/13 months. Mine are both very co-ordinated but probably have hypermobility syndrome.

Two of my three were bum shufflers. Both eventually went straight to walking and never crawled at all. DD2 finally walked at 23 months and DD3 at 21 months. Both wore through hundreds of pairs of trousers and pants etc. Both had begun bum shuffling at 8 - 9 months.

DD1 was my only crawler. She crawled just before her first birthday and then walked at 14 months.

Our son just went straight from bum shuffling to standing/walking - he never crawled at all.

This and never rolled either

tedybear · 15/09/2023 22:09

Eventually she did yes she bum shuffled for about 2 months and started crawling quite late at around 10-11 months. She took first steps at a year old but didn't properly start walking until 15 months so think that's why she did start crawling.

wishIwasonholiday10 · 15/09/2023 22:19

I’ve got a bum shuffler too with no sign of walking or even properly holding herself up against furniture at 14 months. Just wondering for the other bum shufflers who were late walkers did you get any physiotherapy or just wait for them to walk in their own time?

DappledThings · 15/09/2023 22:23

Mine did which really surprised me. Was slow all round. Didn't roll till she was a year, bum shuffled from about 15 months, randomly started crawling at 19 and finally walked at 21. No issues, just taking her time.

DS was never a bum shuffler but never cruised either or pulled himself up. Waited till 16 months and one day got to standing in the middle of the floor and started walking.

SquigglyGum · 15/09/2023 22:27

I was a bum shuffler. Never crawled, just went straight to walking. And I turned out ok! (Ish!)

underneaththeash · 15/09/2023 22:33

DD bum shuffled and then crawled for about a week before she finally walked when she was 18 months and 2 weeks (we’d just been referred.

No musculoskeletal-skeletal issues, but she does have inattentive ADHD.

Mortimermay · 15/09/2023 22:37

No our dd was a bum shuffler. She never crawled and just went straight to walking. She was so fast when bum shuffling that I think crawling was just too much effort! No issues with co-ordination, joint issues etc.

theveryhungrybum · 15/09/2023 22:40

My brother was a bum shuffler and my eldest two boys were as well. All went straight to walking, no crawling in between. All very sporty and coordinated, although my boys do have ligament laxity (and are supposed to wear orthotics in their shoes, but they 'forget'). My youngest crawled, also has ligament laxity and the worst flat feet you've ever seen.

shearwater · 15/09/2023 22:44

I was a bum shuffler, never crawled and walked at 12 months.

DDs were regular crawlers, though DD1 used to drag one leg which I worried about, but she's fine. Both DDs very sporty and good dancers. We're all a bit hypermobile but not to the extent that it's disabling or a big problem.

illiterato · 15/09/2023 22:45

No- never crawled and like yours, hated tummy time. he did struggle to climb ( because it’s basically vertical crawling) but fortunately we lived overseas in a compound with our own soft play so he soon learned from the other kids. Ds is still a bit gangly( all limbs) but he is a good cricketer so I’d say not dyspraxic. It may have helped that where we lived they don’t do the whole “ take their time” thing- the physio hauled him to his feet at 12 months and he was walking weeks later.

We always had carpet and I'd still scoot from one end to the other in record time apparently.

Mingusthebrave · 15/09/2023 23:01

One of mine was a speed bum shuffler and never crawled.
I seem to recall reading once that there may be a link (or correlation?) with dyslexia but that may be coming from the dyspraxia link?
My bum shuffler isn't dyspraxic but does have dyslexia and no sense of left and right.

Tisfortired · 15/09/2023 23:04

DS1 was a bum shuffler and never really crawled, he went from bum shuffling to a brief interlude of a zombie crawl where he’d drag one leg behind him and then just started walking! He took his first steps just before he turned 9 months.

DS2 on the other hand is now the same as DS1 was when he took his first steps and is showing no signs of shuffling, crawling or walking yet! Still quite content to be carried everywhere 😄

BrandyandGinger · 15/09/2023 23:07

I had a high speed bum shuffler who figured out that bum shuffling was faster on tiles and laminate but crawling was faster on carpet. He'd switch over at the kitchen door. It was very funny. He walked at 12 months.

otherwayup · 15/09/2023 23:10

My bum shuffler never crawled and he didn't walk until he was over 2.
By 5 he had more than caught up and was running as fast as forest gump!

He's now over 6ft and very fit and active.

Wingsnfly · 15/09/2023 23:12

My bum shuffler had exactly the same technique you describe. He went straight to walking and never crawled. He did have some fine motor issues at primary school and used a laptop for exams. I've never thought about whether it was related.

Just to reassure you, today he has spent the day doing his own washing and packing his belongings as he's off to university to study Law tomorrow.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 15/09/2023 23:14

DD only crawled once that I saw, just before she walked, otherwise just bum shuffling. I think she walked at about 16 months.

DollyGx · 13/09/2024 12:24

Hey @Moonshine160 sorry I know this is a really old thread but curios to know if your LO ever crawled?! I’ve got a 10 month old who sounds like she’s doing exactly what your LO with the leg stretched out. Trying to encourage crawling but she’s not having any of it 😬

Vintagevixen · 13/09/2024 12:33

No not really. A sort of crab motion before she walked but not a proper crawl, then pulling up and walking.

Nothing at 1 year. Bum shuffle from about 15 months. Pull up/crab motions about 17 months ish. Eventual walking at 20 months.

Super speedy on the bum shuffle though and could always carry a toy with her! Sooo cute too with the bum shuffle.

16 now - very tall, slim and no problems! High centre of gravity and longer to develop balance/muscle tone I think due to being tall/slim.

Saschka · 13/09/2024 12:40

Mine was a roller not a bum shuffler, but he crawled after he learned to walk. When he was playing in the floor and pushing toys around etc.
