Baby Rolling Constantly. Is it normal?

Hi everyone!

My baby boy is 5.5 months old and started rolling from back to front when he was only 3 months old.

Ever since that, the rolling has been constant. I don’t mean frequent, I mean constant. If I put him down on his back, he will roll onto his tummy in about 10 seconds (he hasn’t learnt to roll from front to back yet either).. this is not occasionally when I put him down, it’s every single time! Complete nightmare when I’m trying to get him dressed etc.

He also seems to roll even more when he is tired or upset. I just can’t seem to find any other thread where people talk about this?

Does anyone else’s baby do this? Is it normal, should I speak to my health visitor?

Mine did this and he's a happy and healthy 17 month old!

Is he happy on his front?

Lottie231 · 13/09/2023 21:17

For a while yes! Until he gets tired and can’t get back over.

He also sleeps on his front (we put him down on his back when asleep and he rolls onto front in the night) so he must find it comfy.

My 5.5 month old is the same.

It’s totally normal - both my kids were early rollers and preferred being on their tummies as soon as they could roll onto it (including for sleep)

Loafordeath · 13/09/2023 21:22

Sounds like it's probably normal. Though I don't understand how he can be constantly rolling if he can't roll from front to back?

DuploTrain · 13/09/2023 21:25

Don’t worry, he must just like being on his front… it’s probably better for looking around. He might be an early crawler.

YouHoooo · 13/09/2023 21:28

My 4mo does that. So unlike her sister who rolled a handful of times before she could sit up. I figure this one just enjoys it!

Thisismynewusername1 · 13/09/2023 21:31

My first didn’t roll until quite a bit later- however once she figured it out about 5.5m she used it as her main way of getting about.

she never bum shuffled or crawled, she would just roll at a rate of knots until she got where she wanted to be.

about 7m she stood up and started cruising, and was walking by 9m.

When I say roll I mean a 180 roll. He rolls from back to front, he does tummy time for a while until he’s fed up, then I pick him up. The moment I put him down again on his back he rolls onto his front again.

It's normal to want to practise a new skill. For all of us. Babies aren't any different. There's nothing wrong.

awwwwww. He's just enjoying something he can do with his body !
