Hi all,

My 5 year old had a really rough start to school last year and although it got better after a few weeks she still 'hates school'. She's started year 1 and 5 days in she is really struggling with school anxiety. Today she cried all morning and her teacher said she took her work away because she was so upset and she didn't want to make her feel worse. Trying to ride out the storm and hoping she settles once she's used to the change but now worrying this is it for her school life. It makes me sad to think she doesn't like it there and she's got years to come. Can anyone share any experience where their own children have successfully overcome school anxiety please 🙏

Hey op..how old are your daughter when she started reception? I was going to start my son at four but delayed It until he was five. Most counties in the world don't begin formal schooling until they reach 6 or 7. Remember she's still very young and there is so much required from them at such a delicate age when they should be learning through play (Finland for example).
Anyway, my son to struggles In the mornings. I found having a good solid routine and some exercise helps release some tension and helps with the physical sides of the anxiety. Make sure you yourself appear relaxed too, so many get everything ready the evening before so you can enjoy the morning together. I noticed when my little one seen me stressed it caused more anxiety. Just see how she goes on. Remember she's so young and it's only natural. Some people will suggest neurodiversity but personally I think these emotions are very common and normal. Be patient and let her adjust xx
