13 month old waking up in the morning crying

My 13 month old son is currently waking up every single morning crying hysterically. He sleeps in his cot from around 7.45pm until 4.30am (sometimes we have more night wakings). I normally then bring him in to bed with me, where he drops back off (usually) until he's ready to wake up (between 6-6.30).

When he does wake up for the day, he is immediately really upset, despite me being right there with him. He doesn't want cuddles and pushes me away and throws himself backwards. He doesn't want water/milk. He only stops crying once I turn the light on and start our day.

Do you think he's essentially just having a tantrum because he wants to get up? He does it in the early hours sometimes too and I just have to sit and wait until he calms down and goes back to sleep - sometimes taking an hour. It's an awful way to start the day and I wish I knew how to help him wake up happier!

My 11 month DS does this too. It's also a really loud cry.... No chance of sleeping through it. He's not hungry, doesn't want cuddles. He stops straight away if I play peekaboo or something so it can't be pain. 🤷 he occasionally calls out in his sleep as well. I have a couple of theories. Main one being he is just a grumpy personality? Maybe nightmares? I take too long to get up? Doesn't like his wet nappy? I don't actually know the answer but he's a happy thing in the day so I'm not too worried.

@Lijay I genuinely think "I take too long to get up" has hit the nail on the head for us 😂 It takes me less than 2 mins but obviously it's not quick enough for him. And it's a long time for me when I've got an hysterical crotch goblin in my ear! I'm not worried really either, same as you he's pretty happy during the day, it's just such a shock to the system before 7am.
