Bruises on 3 year old- when to be concerned?

My 3 year old DD seems to have legs that are absolutely covered in bruises! She also has a couple on the elbows and also one or two in the bony bits of her spine.

Do these look like normal boisterous toddler bruises or something to be more concerned about? I do suffer with health anxiety so my brain immediately jumps to Leukaemia, but also don't want to put her through pain of a blood test based on my anxiety.

I should add she seems to be struggling with some constipation at the moment and tells me her tummy hurts but it then goes once she's done a poo. Doesn't look swollen.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks

It's the ones on the side of the knee that would concern me. Do you know how she got them? If yes, then fine. If no, I'd make a GP appointment just to be on the safe side.

But I'm also a worrier!

I have a 4.5 year old boy and personally his legs look like that pretty much all the time

miniworry · 26/08/2023 22:13

@NuffSaidSam I've got no idea how she got them other than the fact she launches herself off every available piece of house or garden furniture! She's certainly a daring 3 year old and is always on the floor.

Literally fine

I have a 2.5 year old, and his lower legs often have bruises like that.

No idea what causes them or how it happens, but the doctor wasn’t concerned, nor nursery or the health visitor. I just assume it’s from constant bumps.

miniworry · 26/08/2023 22:15

@mrsed1987 do you find that they also seem to have them on the bony bits of their arms too?

@mminiworry yes absolutely

Bruises are normal if she's often bumping her legs and is active.

Re: constipation, go to the GP - it's far better to sort it out early rather than risk it becoming a chronic problem. There are lots of teens with awful chronic constipation that their parents didn't get sorted when they were younger.

Just wanted to update this thread incase anyone stumbles across it when searching for similar.

We took our little girl to a private paediatrician to be checked over as more bruises appeared on her spine and an awful one on her knee and I just couldn't shake the worry. Of course she was throwing herself everywhere so they didn't come from nowhere 🤣

He agreed that they did look rather large so ordered a full blood test to check all her blood counts to rule out the 'nasty things'. Blood test all came back normal so she's just an easy bruiser and a wild child!

Thanks for all your advice everyone.

Hi! I’m having similar issues with my daughter (she’s 5) and she gets occasional nosebleeds too. But only occasionally. Had a few when the weather was hot in June and none since but she’s having a blood test on Friday (reassurance purposes according to the doctor rather than being concerned). I’m terrified though. Obviously Dr Google isn’t my friend and I won’t rest until I have the results

My two looked like that for most of their childhood, still do in fact and they are now in their 20s! They used to count their bruises on Saturday mornings to see who had the most 🙄
