Hi all

DS will be leaving nursery in a couple of weeks to start reception 😭 and I don’t know what the done thing is in terms of buying staff gifts.

His key worker is brilliant so I’ll definitely buy her a little something. She loves gardening so I thought maybe some seeds, a pretty plant pot, small bottle of Prosecco and a nice card (is that ok?!). But with regards to the other staff he interacts with lots of them and they often move between the different rooms throughout the nursery. What should I get for the rest of the staff, given there’s probably about 6 or 7 of them that are in and out of the room?

God I’m having this same dilemma. I was thinking key worker and room leader, and a box of donuts for the rest of them to share?!

(Also: starting school… I thought I was OK with it but now we’re on the countdown…. 😭😭😭😭🥺🥺🥺🥺)

Oh and plant pot, Prosecco and card sounds lovely. Both my sons key worker and room leader are young women (early twenties at most) so I was thinking about an ASOS voucher. Vouchers are kinda boring but I think they’ll at least get some use:

The gift sounds lovely and thoughtful! For the other staff maybe a box of cupcakes or doughnuts or something for the staffroom?

@ReeseWitherfork Me too! I’m so emotional about it, he just seems so little still and he’s a summer-born too so he’s not long turned 4 💔
I think the vouchers will be great, they’ll be appreciated and definitely won’t go to waste. Donuts always a winner too! Might steal that idea

@BudgetBuster Thank you! I might go with that then…if I can hide the cakes for a day from my two snack fiends at home 😂

Same here… I didn’t really think about the impact of being a summer born until I saw him in comparison to his new classmates at settling in sessions. He just looked so little! Suddenly feel like I didn’t make the most of the last four years! Going to be fighting the tears at the school gate I think 😅

I can probably hide a box of donuts from my kids, but not my husband… his radar will go off for sure.

Thanks for the thread, you reminded me to order some thank you cards. They’re now on the way… one less job to do.

I have a few family members that work in childcare and unfortunately it’s not uncommon, particularly in nursery type settings, for management to make staff pool any gifts and raffle them off so that each person receives a similar amount. It makes sense in some ways as staff working with babies and toddlers tend not to receive as much as those with the preschoolers, but it’s frustrating when you want to buy something special for a particular member of staff and there’s no guarantee they will actually get it ☹️ Some parents get around this by buying personalised gifts that cannot be given to anyone else, so for example you could buy a voucher but put it in a mug with their name on and wrap in cellophane as one gift maybe with a couple of chocolate bars or something - costa gift cards are nice if you’re not wanting to spend too much!
