Mam teats - size 1 too slow and 2 too fast.

My baby has been showing signs that I need to up the teat size. He has been on teat number 1 and recently has been taking about 45-50 mins to finish a 5 oz bottle. He has been falling asleep whilst feeding and also pushing the bottle away, wanting a break and going back to it 20 mins later so I know he's still hungry.

Today I tried the size 2 teat but the flow is too fast. He finishes the bottle in about 5 mins but he chokes, pulls off suddenly and is sick. I've tried lowering the bottle and pacing him but he gets so stressed out.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can transition or any other teats I could possibly use?

Yep I remember this (also used mam). He’ll get used to the no 2 teats, in the meantime make sure you’re doing paced feeding and giving him lots of breaks (if not already).

Can you pause halfway through for burping or a nappy change? I transitioned mine from size 1 to 2 last week and she's been a bit more sick than usual so been breaking up the feed

pm94 · 21/08/2023 08:36

I burp him about 5 times throughout the feed and he gets really frustrated and kicks off because he wants more milk. I’ll try the nappy change too and persevere I think!

did you stick to the 2 teats with every feed when transitioning? X

Thank you! It seems like a lot of people have had the same issue. Would be great if they done a 1.5 teat or something in between them both.

did you stick with the number 2 teats or go back and forth for a while? X

Tommee tippee vari flow teats are amazing as they go by the baby's suck so they can't get it too slow or too fast

Emv97 · 08/11/2023 19:31

Having the exact same issue and wondering the same question, how did you get on? Did you continue on size 2?
at the moment I’ve gone back too 1😩

Sade49 · 08/11/2023 22:47

Same here @Emv97 so jumping on the thread to see!

It caused reflux for my 11 week old which GP said is linked to the faster flow.

Out of interest, how old is your little one? X

MinnieL · 08/11/2023 22:49

@Emv97 @Sade49 I recommend paced feeding on the teet that’s slightly too fast until DC gets used to it. Have a look at paced feeding via YT, it’s really simple

Georgiexx · 08/11/2023 22:50

So I wasn’t as on the ball this time and only just realised at 11 weeks that I should have moved onto size 2. Moved onto size 2 yesterday and it’s literally pouring out her mouth at times 🤦🏻‍♀️ it’s good because the bottle is done a lot faster but I do fear she’s going to projectile vomit any minute. I remember my first baby used to do that all the time after feeding and I thought this time it was weird she wasn’t but I’m now thinking it probably was the teat issue causing it 🤔 I don’t want to move back to number 1 and have feeds take forever but it is definitely coming out way too fast

crackersforcheese · 08/11/2023 22:54

I found the cross teat better than the 2's, the do get used to it after a while! Either that or I tried a sterile pin in the 1's to make it slightly bigger xx

Daffodil0407 · 08/11/2023 22:57

It worked out quite well really as I actually changed him over to a reflux formula which is a lot thicker and so that worked well with the number 2 teat. Im now almost needing to move up to a size 3 and having the same issue now that I did with the jump from 1-2.. so I've just stuck with the 2 for now... x

Daffodil0407 · 08/11/2023 22:59

@crackersforcheese did you find adding another hole worked? I tried this but didn't find it made much of a difference x

I didn't like another hole just heated the pin and make the existing hole slightly bigger xxx

Oreopie · 16/12/2023 13:23

@pm94 how did your little one get on in the end? Did you stick with size 2 in the end? Currently going through the same

SuperSange · 16/12/2023 14:00

I used a hot needle and made the hole bigger too. Worked a treat.

pm94 · 16/12/2023 22:36

I went back to the size 1 but at the same time I changed his formula to a reflux milk (which is a lot thicker) so therefore I went up to the size 2 and he was fine with it.. when I took him off the reflux formula I think he was just used to it. I recently moved from a 2-3 though and one day he wouldn’t take it at all but tried it the next and he was absolutely fine!
