Sensible or overprotective

We live at the end of a private estate where there's a roundabout. DD is 5 and loves going her bike. She cycles round in the one loop, past our house around the roundabout and crosses the road over a speed bump that she calls "the bridge". She knows to stop and wait if a car is coming and I've witnessed her doing this without having to be reminded.

I always stand at the front gate and watch her the whole time. The woman across the road made a comment "oh I remember when mines were younger and I was scared to let them out my sight". Made me wonder whether I'm being overprotective standing there. I've seen other kids from the estate out on their bikes unsupervised, some look around DDs age. I just think I'd never forgive myself if anything happened to her but I also appreciate its important for her to have some independence.

Just wondered what people's thoughts were.

I wouldn’t leave a 5 year old unsupervised, and it’s not like you are running along beside her.
She was probably just making conversation saying she remembers doing the same, not making out you were overprotective.

Yeah you're right. Just when I see other kids out unsupervised it made me wonder but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

No not over protective at all. Trust your instincts and I’d be watching her very carefully.

I still watch my 9 year old riding her bike up and down tbh.

Thanks. Sometimes I just over think things a bit but you're right, I should just trust my instincts.

Sensible. I won't let my 15yo out on a bike (to get anywhere he would have to use the crazy main road).
