9 month old has itchy eyes

Hey guys, my 9 month old DS has been itching his face today and mainly rubbing and itching his eyes. He can’t sleep because his eyes are itchy and one is slightly swollen from the bottom too. He’s feeling absolutely fine in himself and is happy as always but his eye is itchy and I feel so sad for him as I can’t help him. What should I do?

I'd go the the Chemist and ask to see the Pharmacist.

How is he today?

Thank you 😊 he’s not itching it today but one eye is a little red

Next time gently bathe the eyes with cooled, previously boiled, water every hour. This will help to rinse away any physical irritants like dust and also calm it down. If it continues then seek pharmacy help as they might suggest an antihistamine or a medicated eyewash. His eye is probably swollen due to rubbing (think of it like a bruise, takes a couple of days to calm down), but if it gets redder or more swollen despite not being itchy then seek medical attention.

Does he suffer with hayfever? My LO does and he's been quite bad with it past few days as pollen levels been high

Could be conjunctivitis, my dd caught that around that age iirc. I think I called the gp and they sent a prescription for medicated eyedrops.

Mummy08m · 18/08/2023 10:41

Especially if it's gunky, that's a sign of conjunctivitis I think. Dd's were

It’s not gunky or anything like that, just slightly red from the inner corner. I will go to the pharmacy in a short while but here’s a picture. You literally can’t see in the picture but

The inner corner of his left eye.. it’s a bit red but idk if it’s showing in the picture

Bump?

It doesn't look very red and if it's not gunky either I'd say probably not conjunctivitis or at least only a very mild one. I agree with pp to see a pharmacist rather than GP in the first instance

The sock didn’t work. He’s been rubbing his eye all night and while asleep too. He’s awake now and won’t go back to sleep and his eyelid is now swollen too because of how much he’s been rubbing it. I don’t know what to do. Gonna call my own GP at 9am but there’s 4 hours left for that

The ointment doesn’t seem to be helping at all. His eye has gotten worse, idk if that’s because we haven’t been able to put enough of the ointment in his eye maybe? Or because he’s been itching it so much? But it’s getting worse

Was the ointment from the pharmacist? What did they say they thought the problem was? Hope you get solutions from the gp, all the best
