Books to boost daughters (age 11) confidence

Hi all.

looking for recommendations for any books that my daughter can read/we can read together, to help boost her self esteem.

She’s particularly upset by the hair on her legs. Comments have been made by folk in her class, been going on for a wee while. She’s now so self conscious and is keen to remove the hair from her legs.

I’m happy to support her but don’t want that (hair removal) to be our immediate response. I’m trying my best to talk about body confidence but if anyone has any top tips re reading material I’d be most grateful.

We've printed out a copy of Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman & pinned it on her wall. That’s as far as I’ve got.

Thanks in advance

Would you tell an adult who removes the hair from their legs that they shouldn't remove it and be more body confident? Or is hair removal a quick and easy fix to your dd thinking about things worthy of her brain space ?

While hair removal is part of the patriarchy and societal expectations, Yabu to expect your dd to fight against it - especially if you remove the hairs on her legs.

She is 11 so you probably have more of this kind of thing to come. She may start plucking her eyebrows, want makeup to cover her spots or straighten /curl her hair for school...

Crikey @BoohooWoohoo! Didn’t expect that!
Don't believe I said anything about fighting against patriarchy & societal expectations! 🥴

Know any good books?

I was picked on at school because of my hairy legs. So I shaved them! Having autonomy over my body really helped my confidence.

A Girl's Guide to Being Awesome might be a good book to try?
