EBF and frequent poos

I have a 9 week old daughter who is EBF.

She has always had loose, yellow stools which I've been assured are normal for breast fed babies.

What concerns me a little is she is still going for a poo on average 10+ times per day. From reading online, they tend to settle down around 6 weeks...

Generally speaking she either poos whilst being fed or not long after she's finished.

As a result she has a nasty rash on her bottom which we are struggling to cure due to the constant pooping and changing (but that's for another thread!)

Did anyone else's little ones open their bowels as frequently and when did they start to go less?

Hi OP mine did do frequent pops with BF - have you asked HV about the frequency?

Crunchingleaf · 16/08/2023 23:22

The stools are generally loose enough until they start solids and the colour sounds fine. Generally, you would indeed expect there to be less at this stage bear in mind there are some babies more regular than others.

If you’re worried there is no harm asking a HV or GP especially if there is a strong odour. Especially if it continues on much longer.

My baby literally pooped every about 6-10 times per day until we started weaning just after 6 months. It was an absolute slog 😂🙈

Similar to my little boy. Less frequent after a month or so thankfully!

TheFutureIs · 16/08/2023 23:29

My little one was a very frequent pooper, nearly every change when she was small. She slowed a bit when she started on solids.

Mine was like that, she turned out to be gluten intolerant, I didn’t realise for years. So maybe keep an eye on how she reacts when you eat different foods.

Could also be teething if she’s producing a lot of saliva and swallowing it.

In fact this has reminded me that when dd was cutting teeth she’d poo ever thirty minutes 😱 there was a week when I just couldn’t go out!

Both my children loved to poo at every feed. And throughout the night long past the time everyone else’s babies settled down. Weaning helped stuff them up but DS is still a keen 4-6 times a day boy Hmm

@hanc66 I think the consensus is it's okay OP and not to worry 😊

Mine went from this at the start (her bottom was raw until I discovered Metanium cream), to going a full week between poos which is worrying and distressing for both parent and baby in another way. I can't remember at what age, but before weaning so perhaps 4 months or so.

Both are normal, I should add.

Hi, yeh I spoke to my HV and she wasn't very helpful to be honest, she just sort of stayed on the fence really!

Thanks for all your replies.

I'm currently 14 days in to a dairy free diet but haven't seen an improvement yet. I know it can take a little longer to see a difference but I was hoping to have seen something by now...she doesn't have any other CMPA symptoms so I'm guessing it's unlikely a CMPA...

I considered gluten and I have a dietician calling me next week after I've done the cows milk elimination.

It's reassuring to know some of yours were also quite frequent, I guess it's just difficult when it's your own (and first)! Today she went a grand total of 12 times...!

@hanc66 maybe try the GP instead? I never found my HVs that useful sadly.

Hello OP! I know I’m late to the party but just wanted to reply to say that me and my 9 week (nearly 10 week old) have been experiencing the same thing! I’ve actually been worried sick about it. I’ve spoken to the GP and handed in a sample in case of a tummy bug (which was clear). I’ve also spoken to our Community Infant Feeding team and they have been wonderful. I trialled dairy free but she is thriving and doesn’t have any other CMPA symptoms.

How is it going for you guys now? I wonder if we just have frequent poopers! She did go a few weeks from 5 - 8 weeks only going every 4 or so days. Last week saw the most nappies for us but it was really hot and she was feeding a lot to quench her thirst.
