Is Elsa real?

Light hearted and serious... What do you answer when your 4 year old asks you this? She's been to lots of parties where Elsa has been there but having watched the film again, asked me at the weekend if she's real.

I’d just be honest…”she’s a pretend character from a film that we love watching together and some children really enjoy dressing up as Elsa and playing pretend games”

something like that!

TeaKitten · 14/08/2023 20:05

Be honest, it’d be quite bizarre to not be considering Elsa is animated.

I went with honest. That's generally our guide for communication with our DC. She was confused though, saying she must be real because she'd been at her friends' parties!!

Shes a pretend character that people dress up as to make children happy.

Be prepared this may lead to questions about Santa etc

Mine believed in Unicorns for years as there had been a real unicorn at a preschool party! She is 10yo and still remembers the unicorn but knows it was a pony in costume now... but belief in magic is not necessary bad.

I thought this was about Elsa the lioness?

Kitcaterpillar · 14/08/2023 21:44

Mine knows there's party Elsas who are not the real Elsa because real Elsa is busy in Arrendelle. But she's only just 3 and I'm not from the aggressively sensible Mumsnet school of thought, she can believe silliness for a while yet.

NuffSaidSam · 14/08/2023 21:46

'No, she's just a character in a film'.

That's what I'd go with. The people at parties are wearing fancy dress.

My three year old plays pretend with her Elsa doll/pretends to be Elsa herself but if I try and join in she gives me a withering glare and informs me drily that Elsa isn’t real 😭

Screamingabdabz · 14/08/2023 21:54

I’m all for make believe when it comes to young children but I would go with honesty if only for the fact that Elsa’s childhood is so heartbreakingly sad, I wouldn’t want a child to know that that was real.

BreakTheChain · 14/08/2023 21:59

I would ask her if she thinks she is real. If she says yes I would say something like I wonder what she likes to eat for breakfast or some random question to divert from the questions about her being real. If she says no I would probably take it down the route of telling her there are Kings and Queens and prince's and princesses and probably try and dazzle her with photos of Kate Middleton in all her regalia. I would only do that as I would want the questions to move on to father christmas prematurely
