Perineal tear

I noticed a very small tear near DS's anus and have been advised by my health visitor that it's a perineal tear and not to worry about it. Has anyone else ever seen anything like this? I was quite upset when I discovered it, as have been very careful to change nappies regularly and use Sudocream at each change. He is breastfed and doesn't have constipation, but does seem to strain quite a lot when he poos. He's only 2 weeks old and I feel that I must have been doing something wrong for him to have something like this.

Should I be using Sudocream at each change or at all?

I've been very gentle when cleaning his bottom and use plain water and cotton wool. Is this right?

His bottom has looked quite red a couple of times and I have used Metanium when this has happened. Is this right?

I am using disposable Pampers New Baby nappies.

As a first time Mum, I would really appreciate any advice.

Thanks!

Thanks babyjjbaby! It's good to hear I'm doing something right. Sometimes feels I know next to nothing at the moment, but that will change!

In my experience BF babies always look as if they are pushing out a sack of potatoes.... when in reality its a jet stream of curdled milk

Have you been told the tear will heal by itself ?

Plain water and cotton wool is the best.

Its not easy being a mum is it ... a huge learning curve for us all !
