8 week old goes red, clenchs fists and stiffens for a few seconds

I have an 8 week old and there has been two occasions where she's just being held, and for a few seconds goes really stiff and red in the face with clenched first then stops and does a little cry end is fine again:

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? I'm going to give the health visitor on Monday but just interested if anyone has had similar and what the outcome was! There's no other concerns with her, very alert and feeds well and isn't usually partially stiff bodied

My friends baby did this yesterday! Same age. She was being held by my other friend and her mum says she does it a lot especially when changing her etc. I'm sure it's normal but see what the HV says

I’d be seeing the GP. Film it happening if you can.

I wish I could! The two times it's happened it's happened and been over that quick I don't have time to do anything but be like 'oh'

Are they speaking in tongues? (I jest... Sounds like normal baby stuff to me.)

19annie86 · 11/08/2023 21:52

My baby used to do this

Userwithallthenumbers · 11/08/2023 21:53

Wind/trying to fart? Mine used to do that when building up for a bowel movement.

Comforting know it seems pretty common but of course google has my head whizzing with all sorts!! I'll get in touch with hv or gp if I can get an appointment on Monday!

Mine is a similar age and does this. It's one of three throngs and can be any one of them with my baby depending on where it happens in the wake window.

  1. Gas - burp or put upright on shoulder
  2. Bowl movement ensuing or being worked on for later
  3. Over tired and over stimulated.

It's annoying trying to work out which one it is but I'm getting fairly handy at it

Yep I was going to say it just sounds like she is pooing or farting! Check the nappy.

Fayegirl · 13/08/2023 09:50

I would say it's baby trying to poop, their bodies are just learning this and can struggle. I'd try doing some tummy massage and bicycle legs to help baby

TulipsTwoLips · 13/08/2023 09:54

My baby did that when he was helping food through. He seemed to need to help his digestion along for the first 3 months. It’s not noticeable any more.

Morewineplease10 · 13/08/2023 09:56

Also came on to say bowel movements!

twoandcooplease · 13/08/2023 09:59

If it's as you describe I am confident it is wind but record when you can and show your HV of your worried

I suspect there will be a little surprise for you in the nappy around 15 mins after she does it

spickapan · 13/08/2023 14:09

Thanks everyone!

She's not done it again since I posted this so has still only done it twice in her whole life so I don't think (hopefully) it's anything I need to worry about! It was so scary cause she does really just freeze up but the clenching of her fists does make me feel like it could he nappy related but I'm still fully in my post partum brain and can't remember if she pooed or did a trump long after it!

Just sounds like straining to poo or fart. Learning to control their digestive systems is a whole thing for tiny babies.
