if your 1 year old had eczema would you take them swimming?

My son has had eczema for about 6 months and is slowly getting bit worse. would you take them swimming in a chlorine swimming pool? thanks

I would - for some strange reason going swimming always made the DSs eczema better - though it was rarely very bad. They'd grown out of it by about a year old.

My ds has eczema and he goes swimming, it doesn't seem to affect him much. His is quite well under control though, and we don't take him if it flares up and is raw or bleeding. We always shower the pool water off and apply loads of moisturiser immediately afterwards.

Have you been trying a few different things to see what works? If it's getting worse it might be worth your while seeing if a different cream/bath oil/washing powder might make a difference.

I guess you could always apply a barrier cream before you go in the water and afterwards/ wash & rinse chlorine away and apply cream to avoid excess drying?
I wouldn't go at all if the skin was in any way broken/chapped/red and obviously irritated to start with.

my ds needs loads of barrier cream to beable to tolerate swimming in the sea but doesn't mind the swimming pool.

He may need extra slathering up when he comes out though as the chlorine makes his eczema angry looking.

yes - it generally helps my eczema for some weird reason.

Obviously if you go and he has a bad reaction then I wouldn't go again while it's bad, but I think it's unlikely chlorine would irritate it.

his face is the worse area his chin has been raw and bleeding. my sister said that i should not take him as it will make it worse she used to work in dermatology, not sure what to do, he enjoys it but sleeps really badly through scratches even though i have tried lots of different creams etc

a dermatologist told me that it was unlikely that chlorine caused dd1's eczema (she had it for her first year of life during which I took her lots - it stopped when the swimming lessons ended in the summer..) - but rather the detergents they use (ie the local ozone pool might have similar problems). he advised using something like vaseline as a barrier esp on prone bits (elbow/knee creases)

I have bad eczema and always have had. Swimming pools are the worst for me but I still go occasionnally. Swimming in the sea makes mine better (a lot of people find this - it stings but heals up afterwards).

If you really think your LO is getting sth out of it it would be worth it. How old is your child?

Sorry, it's in the title - I thought it was but then didn't see it in the OP ! I really think at this age if you see DS has sore skin he really does NOT need to go swimming ! My skin is itching thinking about chlorine !

Potential for infection if skin is broken/bleeding - I'd at least wait until it's healed.

If skin is sore and broken ,i would'nt but if just a little red i would. I always lather DS in emulsifying ointment before swimming and it helps, however it does make him a little slippy!

I would and did and do - I lather ds in emollient after (Oilatum) because otherwise I lose grip - wriggly, over-confident AND slippery is a bad combo.
