Babygrows as clothes?

I’ve seen lots of controversy about dressing children in babygrows for places like nursery. Am I a rubbish mum for doing so?

For context, my daughter is 9 months old. She has started crawling and pulling herself up and is in between sizes, so leggings / bottoms are either falling down on her or coming up far too short. She is struggling to wear dresses as she is standing on the bottoms of them, and then falling and getting frustrated.

I have been sending her in footless baby grows to nursery, but feel like I am being judged for doing so.

what are peoples honest opinions on this please?

If I was going to secretly judge anyone for what their child wore to nursery, it would the parents who put their kids in over the top outfits with frilly skirts and little bows round their heads.

Personally at 9 months I think it's a bit odd, but if she's happy with it, it's not going to do any harm obviously. Sizing is very different across brands, if you wanted to get her into clothes you could try things from a few different places? At 9 months last summer our daughter lived in t-shirts and shorts which have quite a lot of flexibility for sizing?

DT’s wore baby grows to nursery (and everywhere else) until they were standing . Much easier and practical. Hate seeing babies dressed up in uncomfortable impractical clothes.

Try dungarees... look more clothes like, but deal with the waist problem.

But a footless all in one is a perfectly practical baby garment.

ChurlishGreen · 09/08/2023 09:57

They are clothes. They are practical, comfortable and suitable for a baby exploring the world.

Gabsssss · 09/08/2023 09:57

She’s in 3-6 clothes at the moment which are coming up too short but the 6-9 are falling down. I feel like whatever I do is wrong as she is so tiny and so determined! They’re not scruffy ones or anything like that and they’re from the white company or places like that.. I want her to be comfy but I’m out of ideas how else to facilitate it with her being on the move so much!

Feetless babygrows…. Absolutely fine. Just a romper with arms really isn’t it?

Mintearo7 · 09/08/2023 09:59

Put mine in babygrows until they could walk. So much easier. Don’t worry about being judged..no one will remember in 10 years. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

…. why didn’t I manage to think of this 🤦🏽‍♀️ thank you!! Seems like it will solve my problems. It’s so awkward at this time of year to know how to dress ourselves, let alone babies who can’t tell us if they’re warm or cold!

Thank you for the reassurance. I see all of the other babies in photos dressed in outfits, but I think they can’t be comfy. Also I know that whatever she wears to nursery is coming home absolutely wrecked, and I would much rather it be a baby grow or a romper than a nice outfit!

It's really fins. Nursery doesn't care as long as it's practical and easy to change the nappy, which they are.

Dd's 2yo classmate was in her peppa Christmas pyjama jumper well into the month of May. It's totally fine

Mummy08m · 09/08/2023 10:04

It's really fine! Not fins. Lol

My dc wore baby grows until they were around 2 Grin

If it was hot, they just had a vest or romper on. We never bothered with clothes. Too much faff. Babies want comfort not fashion

Cowlover89 · 09/08/2023 10:08

Baby grows are fine. My son is 16 months and still in them.

DappledThings · 09/08/2023 10:14

I always found them a right faff with all those poppers so never got why they were considered the easy option. But no judgement for those who do.

I was a big fan of dungarees. Short or long sleeved bodysuit plus dungarees that slip over the shoulder was all mine wore for months. Or short leg ones in summer.

I find the poppers easier than having to completely put the bottoms back on her when they fall down 🤣 I’ve never thought about dungarees for her. I’ll get myself on Vinted for a few pairs that she can absolutely ruin if she wants.

This makes me feel better… she’s just in a nappy and vest in the house 70% of the time as our house is so warm🫣

There are some lovely little rompers around which are a bit more ‘daywear’ than standard sleep suits, but honestly it’s fine.

Coffeewithoatmilk · 09/08/2023 10:22

I know almost a 3 year old who wears only baby grows at home, the ones with the closed feet. Not my business obviously but I always wonder how they still fit him around the feet area. Does he have a small feet or they make baby grows with feet at his age?

ICanSeeMyHouseFromHere · 09/08/2023 10:26

Mine were in zipper onsie things for years probably (I hated poppers) - I had some cute shortie ones that DS1 wore on rotation for an entire summer.

They are clothes. It's not a fashion parade, they just need to be appropriately dressed for the activity and weather.

JenniferBarkley · 09/08/2023 10:30

I'm sure I sent ours to nursery in the odd babygro.

As someone else said though, dungarees are the best - they look "dressed" but just as comfy as a babygro.

I just cut the feet off - makes them last much longer

Why do they need to look dressed?

They don't! Which is why I sent mine in babygros the odd time - I wouldn't send my older kids in PJs. But some people prefer it and that's fine too. We're not talking unsuitable clothing here, just personal preferences.

CoalCraft · 09/08/2023 10:40

I used dungarees at this age until kids were walking, but nothing wrong at all with baby-grows. Anyone judging us a bit pathetic.
