Dent in forehead after bump

Hello,
Wondering if any mums have any experience on toddlers/babies denting their heads after a fall. My 14m old head butted a drawer knob and it formed a 'goose egg' pretty immediately, then after the swelling had gone down I've noticed a small crater-like dent, it's in the centre of her forehead so I'm quite upset about it. It's more noticeable when she raises her eyebrows.

Does anyone have experience of this? Hoping for a positive story of it getting better in time.

Thanks

Did you take her to the hospital? Worth checking in with the GP I'd say.

What did the hospital say?

I’d take her to be checked out; I always thought that was a danger sign related to fractures to be honest

It is, but presumably OP took him to A&E to get it checked as soon as she spotted the dent.

iamboudicca · 05/08/2023 19:51

Did you get it checked out? I have been told by doctors in the bast that they are much more concerned about dents than eggs in head bumps. I hope it’s nothing but please get it checker

firsttimemama1994 · 05/08/2023 20:10

I got her checked out already, she's absolutely fine, just left with a dent In her head 😞 sorry, should have said x

I dented my forehead walking into a kitchen cupboard door a few years ago - sorry to say, it's stayed the same ever since. I don't think I even cut it, just whacked it hard.

Maybe it will improve on a baby's more malleable head, but it might stay.

I don't much notice it, and nobody (not even DH or my mother) has ever commented on it. Try not to make a thing of it and it will just be part of her. If she turns out self-conscious about it, she can have a fringe hairstyle.

My little girl had a dink in her head after a fall. Like you, I was worried it was permanent but it went. Took a year or so though.

KvotheTheBloodless · 06/08/2023 07:46

As she's so little, and her skull is still growing, it's highly likely to disappear, although it'll take a few months. Please don't worry!

Bubblesoffun · 07/08/2023 20:09

I banged my forehead on a cobblestone at age 2. Massive goose egg and dent afterwards. I’m 30 now and it’s still there. But it became less obvious as I grew. You can’t tell just by looking now. I where my dent with pride and it makes a good story! 😁

miscellaineyous · 30/10/2023 14:49

Hey! I am currently dealing with this with my son right now. It's been about 2 weeks since he fell off of our bed. Did the indentation subside or go away? Did your doctor advise it would with time? Thanks in advance!

firsttimemama1994 · 31/10/2023 20:26

@miscellaineyous hey, sorry your little one had an accident too.

I think it looks better than what it did, but not much. I can only assume it will improve in time, but I think it will always be there in some form, since then we've had more falls and bumps and bruises... it's never ending!! Some toddlers are just unlucky with permanent marks I guess, but it's all part of their story (I keep telling myself) 🌸

My youngest has this. Headbutted a door frame when he was 3, had an enormous egg on his forehead which resolved to leave a dint. The dint is still visible when he raises his eyebrows. I'm guessing it must've damaged the underlying muscle.

MotherOfVizslas · 31/10/2023 20:34

I should've said - he's six now.

i 68 years old fell on august 15th and banged one side of my head on the wall and the other side of my head on the lampost next to the wall. I got an egg and a dent, egg went down a wee bit but both still there along with the dent 2.5 months on. apparently it can take 4 months to resolve.

Bookish92 · 26/03/2025 13:35

@firsttimemama1994 Hi! I know this thread is now old sorry but my daughter has a very similar mark to yours but she fell 2.5 weeks now and it's still a small bump there which is why it's a dent when she raises her eyebrows and still slightly discoloured. Just wondering how much improvement you ended up having or if it went ?

2jacqi · 26/03/2025 15:56

@firsttimemama1994 I still have a dent on my head more that 18 months after bumping my head!

Sumnoahmore · 30/05/2025 16:50

If anyone is reading this in 2025, my son hit his head twice in the space of a month and has two huge dents. They haven’t changed at all in the last few months really sad as they’re huge and any expression he makes, makes them more apparent..

Safirsafira · 30/05/2025 20:06

my daughter fell on her face in asda and hit the bottom part of the shelf (like a long metal goes along right below the shelf) and her forhead dented straight away (right in the middle and it made a line like 2cm) . She was crying and was back to normal straightaway and no other symptoms so we didnt go to a&e. We did go to gp couple of days after and the gp said she was fine but the line most likely would stay. And now a year after whenever she frowns theres a line right on the middle of ber forhead :/

Stardust89 · 15/10/2025 22:58

My son fell off a bed in a hotel and hit his face on the other beds leg in August, 2months ago and its still there 😔 some other thread has suggested massaging it to see if it goes away.

The same happened to my baby 1 year ago now, and the dent is still slightly visible. Since it's been over 2 years now OP, is your daughter's still visible?
