Baby switched to cows milk at 9.5 months?!

Met a woman today with a younger baby than mine at a local baby group. She was talking about weaning and how her DS hadn’t really taken to it so far and prefers just stuffing food down the sides of his high chair/on the floor etc. We had a laugh about how much of a mess they make etc.
She then went on to say how she was just glad to no longer be making up bottles of formula. When I questioned what she meant, she said she’d switched her DS to cows milk instead of formula at 9.5 months as making up bottles all the time was a hassle especially when he still wants fed during the night. He’s now almost 10.5 months. I don’t generally comment on others parenting - we all have our own ways, but is this safe for the little boy? Obviously it’s natural for them to cut down on formula as they take in more solids but she specifically say that cows milk is probably about 90% of his daily intake

No it's not safe. They won't be getting the vitamins and minerals and it can affect their kidneys.

However iIce heard of it before, more than once. The city I work in is pretty deprived.

It's not recommended now but historically was the norm. It's probably not going to do any harm, just isn't ideal.

@SiouxsieSiouxStiletto Yes, it was things like that that I was concerned about.

@SErunner I was just concerned about a lack or vitamins etc

Are you going to say something to her?

Mum2jenny · 01/08/2023 21:51

I wouldn’t comment as it used to be the norm.

@greenteaandmarshmallows I’ll probably see her again next week so yes, I think I will say something. Although, I’ll maybe steer more towards making sure baby is getting an appropriate vitamin now that formula milk has been dropped rather than anything else. I don’t like to comment on other parenting normally hence not saying anything at the time but it’s been playing on my mind all day.

@Mum2jenny I know 😊 so many thinks used to be the norm though and guidelines change for a reason!

My sister was on cows milk from 6 weeks old as my mum couldn't breastfeed and she couldn't have formula not sure why. This was 35 years ago and she's fine with 2 kids of her own now
