Can anyone help restore order to bedtime?

DS is 2 and a half and for context his sister was only born last week, so I’m aware it is early days. However, trouble started beforehand. It takes forever to get him into bed: it’s the same routine he’s always had, bath, milk, teeth, books. But he prats about so much, refusing to choose books or running off and laughing his head off. Even when I’m reading he’s being in all honesty annoying, lolling against me and rolling around and talking nonsense over my reading.

So last night when he was just rolling around and ignoring me saying to choose a book I said it was book or bed which he ignored so I put him in bed. He got really upset. I stepped out for one minute then went back to him and told him that he had to choose a book if he wanted one. The rest of the evening went smoothly and he was in bed by 7. Tonight though same again with a side order of running around.

I’m starting to dread bedtime!

Is he maybe just not quite ready for bed? Is he getting enough exercise earlier in the day?

I found it tough to give my eldest the same amount of exercise/outdoor time when her brothers were born. And if she'd had a slightly more sedentary day a pushed bedtime 20-30 minutes later.

Some amont of messing around is quite normal when a sibling arrives. Acting up to get attention is just a way of checking that they are still important to you.
