Two week old baby - is this colic?

Hello I have recently had my baby boy. He is breastfed and feeding has been going pretty well overall. Most of the time he is sleeping quite well at night but will obviously wake us a couple of times for feed or change.

The last two nights he’s been making this weird pushing noise on and off all night (I thought maybe trying to push out gas??) maybe also like a grunting noise and has been generally unsettled in himself. Spoke to midwives and they said it’s probably gas and don’t seem concerned. Just wondered if this could be colic or something else?

Congrats on your baby boy! Doesn't sound like colic to me, though 'colic' is a nonspecific term for severe upset. It's usually characterised by constant crying - hours and hours at a time. I'd say your midwives are probably right. Gas can be a real problem with new babies. I'd look up some burping techniques and 'bicycle legs' to help. Also, they do make a lot of weird noises just as standard. Nobody prepared me for DD's symphony! She sounded like a pug most nights.

sleeping newborns sound like a whole farmyard full of piglets. Totally normal!

Colic is hours of horrible crying. You’d know if you had that on your hands 🤯

Yep they sound like piglets. Colic is unexplained crying usually in the evening.

I agree with others above - you would know about it if it was colic. Colic is just a word used to talk about unexplained crying. It is loud and inconsolable and lasts for hours. Tbh to me this sounds like they're trying to poo or fart! Sometimes babies need help with this - try moving their legs as of they're riding a bike.

Thank you for the advice. Sounds like it could be pooping or gas related then. We have a baby massage person coming out today so hopefully they can help show us some techniques
