How long did it take for your baby to sleep at nursery?

My 12mo has just started nursery. He’s always found it hard to switch off to go to sleep and he’s a very light sleeper. At home he sleeps in a very dark room (even had to tape the black out blind to the window!), with white noise. At nursery, they have a separate sleep room but there’s no door on it so it’s obviously still noisy and whilst the blinds are drawn, it’s basically broad daylight. They have a white noise machine but it’s not as loud as our one at home.

At home he can put himself to sleep and naps well now (after lots of hard work) but he’s not napping at all at nursery, as expected.

I hope that he’ll get used to it eventually but for anyone whose LO’s were similar, how long did it take for them?! He’s so unhappy, understandably.

Never. Ds was 2 though when he started and although all the other 2 year olds would nap there, he would be found playing in the gym room

Bump. Anyone?

Immediately. Despite being a terrible napper at home 😂

It took my DD about 6 weeks to properly settle in. She was 11 months old when started. She sleeps well there now, maybe not quite as long, although it's v different to home. Good luck, hopefully he'll get there soon. What do the nursery staff say?

Scrambledegghead · 22/07/2023 06:32

Our set up at home is similar to yours but our nursery has a nap room with the door shut and white noise. DS started at 12 months and slept there almost immediately but not for as long as he would at home- he started with one sleep cycle there and then woke up. It took him about a month or so to get into a similar routine to home where he was sleeping similar lengths here and there. Although it’s still hit and miss now at 21 months, sometimes he has an hour there but mostly 2 whereas at home it’s pretty much always 2.

A few weeks for her to have the same length sleep as she did at home, she started a 10 months.

It didn't take very long, basically the first time they tried, it worked. They used to put him in a buggy and take them all for a walk and he'd go off to sleep! He does now sometimes go into the sleep room with the other toddlers - he is nearly 2. Started at 16 months (but it took about 3 months for him to even go long enough to nap there - long story!)

Gabby10 · 22/07/2023 07:18

Around 6 weeks but even then it's not her normal nap- at home she'll nap for around 1:30-2hrs at about 11, at nursery it's normally about 3pm for 45mins! The nursery staff laugh and call my DD and two other the little die hards that refuse to sleep until they are basically asleep stood up 😂. Safe to say the second she gets in the car she drops off!

Flowersandbiscuits · 22/07/2023 07:37

@Gabby10 I’m fully expecting this too. Did she not nap at all during that 6 weeks?

I mean they did both sleep from the get go but hardly and nowhere near enough. DC1 frankly never slept enough there so it was just a case of her getting older and needing less sleep and coping better with that way. DC2 I would say it hasn't been quite as bad hes just always seemed to need less sleep than DC1 and eventually he did settle to have a regular 1.5hr ish nap which is perfectly adequate for him (although he still often sleeps longer than this at home). But that only happened around the 18 month mark and he'd been at nursery since he was 11 months. He's about to move rooms too (at 21 months) so I'm anticipating that might go haywire again then too when he's with the older toddlers, some of whom may not nap, and many of whom will nap for a shorter period of time. But we will see.

Mine started at 13.5 months. Slept straight away but average was 30 minutes. It's only recently he's started generally going a bit longer, around 60-90 minutes. He's 18 months. Does around 2 hours at home. He's settled really well otherwise so I've just rolled with it.
