How can I stop DD thumbsucking!?

ANY tips please send them my way….. dd is 7 and has been sucking her thumb since she was a baby. We should have nip it in the bud earlier most probably but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Now she’s getting older I would really like to try and get her to stop. We’ve tried bribery. First one included a hamster but as soon as we got it, she went back to sucking her thumb. That was last year. Most recently we’ve done a fancy pencil case bribe. She did amazing but yet again as soon as the pencil case arrived she started with the thumb again! So it’s a bit frustrating as I know she can do it. Bribes will be stopping from now on. Just don’t know what else to try….. she will need braces when she’s older as all her bottom teeth have grown back wonky. I feel like the older she’s getting, the harder it’s going to be to get her to stop.

Thumbsies worked for my DD at a similar age.

My DD6 still sucks her thumb, we just got thumbsies and it has cut it down a lot.

Mine worked it out for herself a bit older than yours and suggested a reward, we agreed on no thumb for 3 months before she got it

I sucked my thumb until I was around 8. Despite several attempts by my parents I stopped once I started to get teased about it by others.

Mine stopped thumbsucking during the day when the dentist explained why it was so bad for your teeth.

I've sucked my thumb on and off my whole life but never needed braces. It's very difficult to stop.

I was 16 and teeth are fine

Most teenagers have braces regardless of thumb sucking.

Those little thumb gloves things were a miracle for ds. He used to suck of the nail biting horrible taste stuff so he could suck the thumb...

Moonlaserbearwolf · 16/07/2023 23:05

Try that disgusting tasting nail polish. It worked miracles on my 8 and 6 year old a few years ago. We had tried a few things before and nothing had worked.
Both children had the polish their nails for 2 weeks and once it was removed, they had fallen out of the thumb sucking habit. Still can’t believe how easy it was in the end! The older child will still have to have a brace sadly - wished I’d done it 2 years earlier.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 16/07/2023 23:05

The thumb guards didn’t work for us. The nail polish tasted so foul that neither child would have been able to suck it long enough to remove it.

I'm 53 and still suck my thumb...! Never had braces.

Stratocumulus · 16/07/2023 23:10

Mine sucked her thumb until about 7 or 8. We never tried to stop her because I could see the calm look on her face when she was doing it. She would twiddle her ear lobe with the opposite hand at the same time.
She’s got beautiful teeth, never needed braces but if she had of done, so what? We’d have crossed that bridge when we came to it like millions of teen mums all around the world.

I'm 52, still suck my thumb.
