Which sound machine for white noise...

...ideally something that sounds like a fan and can run all night, with a mains plug. Does it need to be one of the expensive ones? Or will a cheap option work for this? TIA!

Marpac dohm classic lasted us really well

HeidiUpTheMountain · 06/07/2023 21:34

Can you just use an app on an old phone without a sim? It’s all free then. I run one that sounds like an air conditioner fan all night on my iPad.

TokenGinger · 06/07/2023 21:37

I just tell Alexa to play the sound for 12 hours on my echo dot.

We have a couple off amazon, around £20 each I think. They have various noises from 'normal' white noise to rain forest to storms, etc. Have lasted our kids years and still going. No idea which ones exactly, but they'd probably be 'amazon choice' and good reviews.

Both mains run, used for 12 hours+ over night.

YouTube has ones that last 10 hours if you can spare your phone/tablet

Tadpolle · 06/07/2023 21:46

Radio tuned to static.

I'd get an Alexa dot, then it has life beyond being a white noise machine

bettynutkins · 06/07/2023 21:50

We have the dreamegg off Amazon. Absolutely love it. Mains plug but also lasts 2-3 nights without needing a charge if needed. We've had it nearly 3 years and has been used almost every night.

itsapalaver · 06/07/2023 21:53

I just use white noise on Spotify and play it through the Sonos speaker.

Ayopopaya · 07/07/2023 07:44

@itsapalaver I used to do this but they took all the long tracks of white / pink noise that I was using down! Now can only find playlists of shorter bursts which is disruptive. What are you listening to???

N819 · 07/07/2023 07:50

If you have an iPhone, it can play white noise.

Glow Dreaming - it's a lifesaver. 12 hours of white noise combined with a special light and cold air humidifier. Love mine - my daughter never slept until we got it (2.5 years old!) and now she's a super sleeper.

Probably more than you'd want to pay, but I use the LectroFan. I'm in a unit with very thin walls and I've a lifetime of being really sensitive to noise. This runs off the mains and has fan and white noise options.
