Am doing some birthday present shopping for DD who's going to be 2 this July - so, hit me with your favourite books!

Current favourites are Julia Donaldson, which we already have a vast array of - but looking for something that me and DH will enjoy too hopefully!

Look in The Works if you have one near you, they often have packs of books for little ones.

I love:
Fox in the Dark - it has a lovely rhythm
Banana by Ed Vere. It's a very simple book that my DDs loved and eventually is also a good example of reading with intonation.
Press Here by Herve Tullet
Who's Hiding
Are the Dinosaurs Dead, Dad? - possibly for a bit older than toddler
Meet the Parents by Peter Bently - it's spot on with what it is like to be a parent for our family.
I love Sandra Boynton books, my favourite is Hippos Go Beserk - I'm a sucker for numbers and rhymes, which this one does particularly well.
I really want to eat a child - again possibly a bit older than toddler.
Tuck me in! is a lovely book where you tuck in baby animals by turning the pages. My DDs loved it when I read it but got the animals wrong and they could correct me.
The Hairy Toe (if your DC don't find it too scary)
Little Rabbit Foo Foo
I will love you anyway by Mick and Chloe Inkpen - I tended to read this and "Mama, do you love me", when DD2 had a more challenging day as they helped us to end on a loving note.
Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs

I love a good children's book - but struggled when my DDs liked the ones I couldn't stand. The Mr Men books got lost behind the bookcase as I just couldn't stand them.

Great thread! Make sure you get books you like, not just your toddler!

I'm not sure about my son, but I loved Octopants, now I know it off by heart.

I also like guess how much I love you, it's been mentioned already on here. For more early toddler age, the usborne "sounds" books are good. Not much "story" but you can look at the page. Garden Sounds is my favourite.

Not a big fan of some of the repetitive ones, Elmer is ok but gruffalo I couldn't manage. But I also hate the style of song 10 green bottles or 5 little speckled frogs so it might just be me. My son is fine with them.

I got really fed up with You Choose. I know it's a MN favourite! I just find that my kids want to choose everything rather than crafting a fun new story every time, so every page just becomes "list all the items on this page" which is boring (for me).

I think some books are better to get from the library and that is one of them IMO.

Same for all the character dirge like Paw Patrol, Thomas etc.

Oh, there is a brilliant one called Pete's a Pizza. It is so dated but the illustrations are funny.

I love reading Dr. Seuss especially Green Eggs and Ham or Fox in Socks (but this is no good if you hate tongue twisters).

I don't get Some Dogs Do. It's really popular but I don't understand why.

I am a big advocate of only keeping books that you enjoy reading in the house, not keeping your own copies, but visiting the library regularly to let them get their Peppa fix or whatever and you don't die of boredom reading it every night for months.

I think one of my absolute favourites though is Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus. So funny.

Giselletheunicorn · 02/07/2023 21:28

Rainbow Rob is just adorable....

We also loved anything by Sandra Boynton, especially Hippos Go Beserk.

I miss kid books (DS is 18 next week)

A few I remember

Hairy Mclary (from Donaldsons Dairy)
Dinosaur Roar
We're going on a bear hunt
Some Dogs Do
Guess how much I love you
Aliens love Underpants

Hairy mclary is a big hit here!

This night garden book - not sure if it's even prints now but my dd adored it. We had to get a new copy after she threw up on the first one.

We also had a book called something similar to 10 little frogs. It had hard little frogs and you saw less on each page as they jumped away. Just had the loveliest rhymes again it would have been about 2010 so no idea if still published.

My little one loves Ten minutes to bed little dinosaur. It’s a lovely rhythm to it. There’s quite a few in the collection- 10 minutes to bed little dragon/little unicorn ( to name a few). The start of the book shows map with all the little locations where the books take place. They kind of overlap in a way, with dragons being mentioned in the unicorn book and viva versa.

Werewolfnotswearwolf · 02/07/2023 21:39

101 Bums is genuinely so much fun to read!

whatthefreshhell · 02/07/2023 21:42

You Choose - Nick Sharratt - we had at least two copies of this because they were so well thumbed.

redteapot · 02/07/2023 21:47

The Girl and the Dinosaur is lovely too

DelurkingAJ · 02/07/2023 21:51

Hairy McClarey
Mr Magnolia (and others by Quentin Blake, Zagazoo was also a big hit)
Aliens Love Underpants
10 Little Fingers and 10 Little Toes
Day the Crayons Quit
Teddy Bear Cold Cure
The Little Red Train

DS2 adored You Choose but every time he picked it I died a little because I was forced to point to every picture and name what it was before he picked the same favourite things each time. And it took FOREVER!

ChocChipHandbag · 02/07/2023 21:51

I was really pleasantly surprised by Dr Seuss. Not a series I grew up with at all, had heard of him of course but had no emotional connection, if you see what I mean. The rhymes are a joy to read, they scan beautifully, which is something they have in common with Julia Donaldson, they are a pleasure to read. For slightly older kids The Lorax is a really thought-provoking story. I also like Yertle the Turtle.

I second the recommendations for the Oi! Books and You’re Called What?

Tiger who came to Tea is a gold-plated classic, so much so that I bought an extra copy and framed several of the pages for DS’ bedroom wall.

Hairy Maclary I love, though some are better than others, the one where he ends up in the garden centre after getting locked in the delivery van is my favourite after the original, also Slinki Malinki.

An unexpected favourite that someone gave me was Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox. It’s for really little ones though.

The original Where’s Spot? is great with its 1970s drawings, the others are a bit rubbish though.

I loved Mr Men as a kid but as an adult I kind of feel that a lot of them are actually portraits of people with metal illnesses!

You Can’t put an Elephant on a Bus! and its sequels are great.

Some I haven’t seen mentioned yet:

Bear and Hare (all the books in the series but especially Snow)
Let’s Find Momo (you have to find a dog and various other things on the pages - DS completely loved it aged 2-3)
The Odd Egg (loved the crocodile at the end)
Animalium (just loved looking at the pictures)
Lost and Found
Up and Down (a National Trust book, not the Oliver Jeffers one)
Little Crab
Little Owl Lost
