Am doing some birthday present shopping for DD who's going to be 2 this July - so, hit me with your favourite books!

Current favourites are Julia Donaldson, which we already have a vast array of - but looking for something that me and DH will enjoy too hopefully!

Grufallo, I still remember it by heart!

febbabies2023 · 01/07/2023 22:37

Toddler really likes the Rachel Bright books at the moment. I quite enjoy them too!
(His 3 favs being hugasaurus, stompasaurus and the squirrels that squabbled)

stickybear · 01/07/2023 22:42

The only book my two year old will currently entertain is We're Going on a Bear Hunt. His big brother loved it at the same age too.

Agree that Maisy seems dull but my nearly 2yo is really taken by it. We got a Maisy bus one from the library and he likes pointing out all the details on each page. "Door. Ello. Open. Cat. One two. Rain. Rain. Oh no! Ssh (fake snoring sound) Bye bye. Bus. Door."

He says more words when reading that book than he does in an entire day.

Other current favourites

Goodnight Digger
Baby's catalogue
Anything lift the flap
The dog who would dig
We're going on a bear hunt
Anything by Sandra Boynton but especially:
Moo baa la la la
Happy hippo angry duck
Halloween eek
Pyjama time

Stuck - Oliver Jeffers

The Great Dog Bottom Swap

I remember me and Ds1 nearly wetting ourselves laughing at Stuck. It's just so absurd.

All Oliver Jeffers books are great.

The Way Back Home and Lost and Found particularly.

If I were to ask Ds2 what he remembers best, he would say You Choose.

Greenfree · 01/07/2023 22:55

The Spot book series was a hit with mine! The ones that a little flaps that they can lift up not the basic ones.

merryhouse · 01/07/2023 23:03

No More Kissing! - Emma Chichester Clark
Rover - Michael Rosen
Dog Is Thirsty - Satoshi Kitamura

merryhouse · 01/07/2023 23:04

The Elephant and the Bad Baby - Raymond Briggs ("and they went rur rur rur, aw dow roa")

DelphiniumBlue · 01/07/2023 23:07

'Can't you sleep Little bear' and 'Cuddly Dudley' were our boys' favourites along with 'Percy the Park Keeper' 'Burglar Bill', 'Owl Babies' and the Rod Campbell books 'Dear Zoo' and 'My Presents'. Oh, and the 'Alfie' books by Shirley Hughes, although those are very much last century! But my DC were born between 92-2000!

OneLittleFinger · 01/07/2023 23:07

You Must Never Touch a Dinosaur - the irony is great and there's lots of actions you can add as you read it.

Ten Little Fingers was another favourite at that age.

Franklefoot · 01/07/2023 23:11

My mam has always spent a lot of time carefully choosing books for my little ones, and has come up with some great ones:
Farmer Duck
Would you rather
The I want my hat back/this is not my hat/we found a hat trilogy
The Great Gran Plan
All ones I don't mind reading over and over again, which says something.

Wouldlovetobeinthesun · 01/07/2023 23:12

No Bed Without Ted. Even years later, we can all still recite it.

caringcarer · 01/07/2023 23:14

Katie Morgan and the Tiresome Ted. My DD loved that book and demanded I read it to her every day. My DS loved Only One Woof, one of the James Heriot books.

vintagechristmas · 01/07/2023 23:14

Shark in the Park is legendary in our house. The original is the best.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 01/07/2023 23:18

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 01/07/2023 20:14

Each Peach Pear Plum or The Giant Jam Sandwich. Equally strong contenders.

These and Peepo. I love the sentiment and the rhythm of the words, and the pictures are great

Toddler101 · 01/07/2023 23:25

The Wonky Donkey - my 3 year old thinks its hilarious

CarrotSoupwithCheese · 01/07/2023 23:36

Carouselfish · 01/07/2023 22:33

The Lamb Who Came to Dinner (adorable, old wolf adopts lamb he meant to eat)
Never Ask a Dinosaur to Dinner ( really great rhymes )
The Storm Whale ( lovely pictures)
I Am a Tiger (One for the gender critical parent to appreciate)

Oooh am off to reread “I am a Tiger” now to appreciate this!

takeasadsongandmakeitbetter · 01/07/2023 23:38

Loads of great suggestions!

So glad to see Jez Alborough getting some recognition- we love his books! 'Dogs don't fly' is our favourite.

Quentin Blake has some wonderful stories- we love 'cockatoos'

'Peepo' was my mums, mine and both my sons favourite book - so nostalgic

'Dinosaurs and all that rubbish' is another amazing book with a good message.

'You choose' are amazing but tend to hype our 5yo up before bed.

The oi frog series is brilliant too!

CoodleMoodle · 01/07/2023 23:38

Mog (all of them but I can't do Goodbye Mog for obvious reasons)
Hairy Maclary
100 Dogs/Cats/Birds
Diggersaurs
Oi Dog/Frog/Cat/etc
Quick Quack Quentin
My Big Shouting Day
Once There Were Giants
I Want My Hat Back
PB Bear
Spot
Kipper
Alphonse, That Is Not Okay To Do
Bad Cat

My two were/are also big fans of search and find books, we have some easier ones they could do when they were younger too!

MsSquiz · 01/07/2023 23:40

My 3.5 year old loves:
Oi frog/cat/dog/duck billed platypus
You're called what?
You choose
Pip & Posy
10 minutes to bedtime little monster/unicorn/fairy/dragon/dinosaur
The tiger who came for tea
One night in the zoo

Bohoboo · 01/07/2023 23:54

Snatchabook. We adored this book and I miss reading it now they are older.

Runnersandtoms · 02/07/2023 00:03

CherryLipgloss · 01/07/2023 20:36

You Choose is my absolute favourite

Yes You Choose is the best book ever. My kids aged 12, 15 and 17 found it still on the shelf the other day and had great fun going through it lol.

Maybe not for a 2 year old but for age 3/4 plus, The Book with no pictures is ridiculously funny.

user50316 · 02/07/2023 00:04

The jolly postman series! Absolutely brilliant

2021mumma · 02/07/2023 00:22
