Hi everyone,

DD is almost 8 and still carries a teddy about with her. She also sucks her thumb while she does this. I thought it was a phase she’d grow out of but doesn’t seem to be.
Does anyone have any experience with this? I was thinking of reducing the times she has it.

Thanks

My 6YO still does this but we’ve been strict about it living in her bed since she was about 4.

Yep, teddy at bedtime only. And consider some of that Stop Bite for her thumbs.

Why do you want her to stop?

Thanks everyone. Just thinking she might be too old for this now? I’m no expert though. In my mind it’s the equivalent of a dummy, could be wrong though.

Sorry-not trying to be difficult. But why too old for a bear? Dummies are different- they can get in the way of speech-but I don't see an issue with a bear!

RoseA89 · 01/07/2023 10:28

@CurlewKate she carries it about everywhere with her. It’s very hard to get her to even leave it in the car while we go into the shops. She sucks her fingers too while she has it. I was just asking for opinions, I don’t know what the answer is. I just feel she is too old for this now. A bear is fine to play with or have in bed but it’s with her all the time.

I think it is pretty much the same as the dummy tbh. It’s not just a teddy when the result is thumb sucking and that level of attachment. I know my DD uses hers in the same way her toddler brother uses his dummy. It’s not just that emotionally I feel my DD is too old to carry a comforter around, it’s also the big teeth that will be messed up by constant thumb sucking. I would never remove it from her completely but I feel that at her age it’s appropriate for it to live in her bed.

My dc is 12 and still has a soft toy that he sits with in the house. He doesn't take it out anywhere though.

Thanks everyone. I’ll put the teddy in her bed and encourage her to keep it there.
