What age did your child get a smart phone? And what was the reason for them getting it?

Hand down phones at 10.
DD1 ... to stay in contact with friends when we moved
DD2... just a small tablet really!

No money on them until they started going out and about in Secondary school

Both were 11. They were starting secondary school and it was easier if they could access apps used by the school.

11 so just recently for my youngest. At the minute he's on a ban from it cos there was unsuitable stuff being sent by others in the school group chat and I didn't like it. So he's had to block those chats and stay off the phone for a while. He will need it properly in Sept for high school, but again ill be watching it like a hawk.

Ds1- age 11. He'd had a hand me down one without a sim card from about age 9 to play games and take photos.

Ds2- age 12 when he was travelling a fair distance to school independently. He wasn't very interested in having one before that and still rarely uses it.

Ds3- 8th birthday, March 2020, so he could keep in touch with his grandparents and friends without always using mine.

All had time limits until 14th birthday, I regularly checked in until then. After age 14 (random age, no idea why we picked that) we were not so tight about time restrictions. I still know their passwords but haven't checked much past age 14.
