Sad at school and attachment

My 4 yo has told me he cries in a little hut at school at play time because he misses me and no-one sees him. Now I can't stop crying either. How do I deal with this and is it normal to have this deep an empathetic connection? I feel everything he does which means I get upset at the silliest little things!

I think all parents would be upset to hear their little child was crying alone at school. Have you spoken to his teacher about it? The school year is almost over, how long has this been going on?

Yep, that sounds like parenting to me! It sucks!

Seriously, go to the teacher and ask them how he seems at school and specifically at break-time.

I would really try not to catastrophise a) because when he says "I cry in a little hut because I miss you" it may mean that he cried once for about 30 seconds. 4yos aren't good at accuracy, bless 'em.

and b) plenty of Reception kids do get a bit tearful especially this time in the year- it doesn't necessarily mean anything particularly bad is at play here.

Does he seem happy in general? Does he go in to school ok? If this is the first indication of him being unhappy I wouldn't think you have much to worry about.
