Reception School Parents' Meeting - Questions to ask

I feel like I should know this as I'm a teacher myself, albeit Y6 so the other end of the primary school range. But, I'm sleep deprived with a newborn so my brain is somewhat fried! 🙈🙃

Anywho, I have my eldest son's welcome meeting with his reception teacher tomorrow and don't want to forget to ask anything important (again, due to fried, tired baby-brain).

What questions did/would you ask?

TIA

I didn't have any such meetings. We did have a few transition events for the whole class but I would have treated a 1-2-1 meeting the same; that it was a chance for them to give me information rather than trying to come up with questions when I didn't have any.

We had this last week. I asked about the toilet arrangements, some questions about how the children who weren't from the attached pre-school settle and that was about it. We had a quick discussion about the phonics books they use but most of the conversation was about what my DS is interested in, feedback from his nursery etc.

Apparently the main thing other parents asked about was the snack schedule!

I asked about the settling in process - I couldn't be having weeks of half days as I work full time. I also asked about the wrap around care as we would be dependent on it as both my husband and I work full time.

What you need to send in every day and do you need to send in wellies/waterproofs. Snacks. How lunches work. Wraparound care. Any apps that they use for updates and Comms.

I’ve done this twice now and found that the teacher was well armed with a load of stuff she was going to tell me, precipitating most questions I had

And more or less the same information will come again in one form or another before or around your child starting school, so don’t worry if you’re fried brain doesn’t take it all in tomorrow!

You’ll definitely be told all the usual stuff like what day PE is etc.

Have a think about your DC and anything you think might help them with starting. Do they really like to know where the loo is? Do they love/hate eating with others? Just think about your kid in the Reception context and the questions will come!

Your not you’re!

Thank you all for the great suggestions! Much of what you've mentioned I had on my list but will definitely be asking about snack times and for the school menu, too.

Thank you again 😊

We got screeds and screeds of information and I'm a teacher myself, but nowhere did it tell us the school start and finish times (also not on the website) so that was something I later had to check.
