My 10 year old ds has been referred urgently to gastroenterologist as he’s been having blood in his stools constantly nauseous and heartburn and stomach pain I’m worried has anyone had anything similar?

Yes, last autumn. My younger son (then 14) got ill w diarrhoea and stomach pain, rapidly declined over a period of 3 weeks and lost over 10kg in weight. We got an urgent referral to gastric paediatric services but he was admitted to hospital via a&e the weekend before his appointment as he was just so unwell.

3 weeks stay in hospital and he was diagnosed w crohns disease. I am guessing with your sons symptoms they will check for that, and ulcerative colitis as well as other causes such as infection and coeliac disease.

Whilst on the gastro ward we met several other children w similar stories and diagnoses.

This is the worst time, when your child is sick and you don't know what's wrong. This referral is the start of the path to recovery.

Try not to panic as it could be so many things and worrying yourself sick before you know won't help anyone
It may be something like a gluten intolerance or stomach Ulcer. Fingers crossed you're seen soon and get some answers

Thank you!
the pain seems to come and go
but he feels sick often
and then the blood really worried me
glad the referral is urgent so hopefully we won’t be waiting too long!

Try to keep a food diary of what he eats everyday and make a note of when he has the pains to see if there are any patterns.
Sounds gross but have a look at his poop too and make a note as this will be what the team ask about it, he could be constipated and the blood is from straining etc
